{"id":6665,"date":"2013-07-11T06:57:05","date_gmt":"2013-07-11T06:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=6665"},"modified":"2013-07-11T07:02:34","modified_gmt":"2013-07-11T07:02:34","slug":"monsoon-mayhem-in-centrl-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/07\/11\/monsoon-mayhem-in-centrl-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Monsoon mayhem in Central China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last few days Central China has been experiencing exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall, causing very high levels of damage.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/trmm.gsfc.nasa.gov\/publications_dir\/landslide_weekly_2.html\">TRMM data for landslide potential for the last seven days<\/a> of rainfall highlights the areas considered likely to be affected by landslides (and note that there are also substantial parts of N. India and Nepal that are experiencing problems:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/07\/13_07-TRMM-China.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6666\" alt=\"13_07 TRMM China\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/07\/13_07-TRMM-China-e1373521367378.gif\" width=\"639\" height=\"546\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the worst of the rainfall appears to have affected the areas struck by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province.\u00a0 This is a zone that remains very vulnerable to landslides because of the legacy of the seismic even, compounded by inappropriate development in the rush to rebuild after the earthquake.\u00a0 The effects have been disastrous.\u00a0 The largest impact to date is the landslide\u00a0 at <span id=\"Zoom\">Sanxi in the area administered by Dujiangyan City<\/span>, which is <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/china\/2013-07\/11\/c_132532141.htm\">reported to have killed 12 people<\/a> whilst a further 11 are missing, with very limited chances of survival.\u00a0 The landslide is reportedly very large, with a travel distance of 2 km and a volume of 1.5 million cubic metres.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in this region landslides are causing substantial issues, and it is surprising that there have not been more fatalities.\u00a0 For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/03\/25\/beichuan-photos-of-the-aftermath-of-a-natural-catastrophe\/\">the earthquake-devastated town of Beichuan<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/china\/2013-07\/09\/c_132525959.htm\">reportedly flooded once again<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/photo\/2013-07\/09\/c_132526269_2.htm\">Xinhua has a set of images of landslide damage<\/a> elsewhere across the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/01\/07\/an-update-on-landslides-in-beichuan\/\">Beichuan and Wenchuan regions<\/a>, including these:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/07\/13_07-Beichuan-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6669\" alt=\"13_07 Beichuan 1\" (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>In some cases the damage from these events looks to be very serious, causing long term disruption.\u00a0 Unfortunately, with the rainy season only just starting, there may be more to come.\u00a0 Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gdacs.org\/report.aspx?eventtype=TC&amp;eventid=38773\">Typhoon Soulik is likely to make landfall over SW China in the next 48 hours<\/a>, bringing exceptional levels of rainfall to areas within a few hundreds of kilometres of the coast:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/07\/13_07-Soulik-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6674\" alt=\"13_07 Soulik 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/07\/13_07-Soulik-1.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/07\/13_07-Soulik-1.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/07\/13_07-Soulik-1-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whilst it is unlikely that the rainfall from this event will affect Sichuan, it is likely to cause serious damage and disruption to this other part of China.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content
