the cause of the debris flow disaster is now clear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Indian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrsc.gov.in\/\">National Remote Sensing Centre<\/a> has released a new set of images of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/25\/before-and-after-nasa-satellite-imagery-of-the-debris-flow-events-at-kedarnath\/\">Kedarnath are<\/a>a, collected using the RISAT-1 instrument.\u00a0 These are very high quality images that allow a proper analysis of the events that caused the disaster.\u00a0 These can be viewed in their excellent GIS system, <a href=\"http:\/\/bhuvan-noeda.nrsc.gov.in\/projects\/flood\/\">Bhuvan<\/a>.\u00a0 In a post two days ago I suggested that the disaster might have been caused by two different events, first a landslide induced debris from that came from the area of the glacier to the northeast; second a glacial-related flow that came from the glacier to the northeast.\u00a0 In this post I am going to take a look at each of these.\u00a0 However, I&#8217;ll start with an image of the town itself.\u00a0 Note that all of the images shown here are taken from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bhuvan-noeda.nrsc.gov.in\/projects\/flood\/\">Bhuvan<\/a> system.\u00a0 This is the town, showing the flows that have come from the north:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/27\/new-high-resolution-images-of-kedarnath-the-cause-of-the-debris-flow-disaster-is-now-clear\/13_06-bhuvan-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6614\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6614\" title=\"13_06 Bhuvan 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Bhuvan-1-e1372311874571.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"470\" \/><\/a>..<\/p>\n<p>The very high level of damage to the town is clearly evident.\u00a0 Also clear is the two flows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To the north-east, a flow that has come down the margin of the glacier (the large dark grey mass at the top of the image) and then spread out to hit the town.<\/li>\n<li>To the north-west, a flow that has come from the other glacier to strike the town.\u00a0 Note that much of this flow has passed to the west of the town, but it is also clear that a portion struck it directly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>My interpretation is the that the flow from the northwest occurred after the one from the north-east, based on the juxtaposition of the sediments.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll now take a look at the source of the flow to the northeast.\u00a0 Upstream the area looks like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/27\/new-high-resolution-images-of-kedarnath-the-cause-of-the-debris-flow-disaster-is-now-clear\/13_06-bhuvan-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6615\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6615\" title=\"13_06 Bhuvan 2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Bhuvan-2-e1372312466238.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a>..<\/p>\n<p>What is clear from this high resolution image is that the debris flow here was initiated by a landslide high on the hillside, which then ran down the slope entraining debris en route.\u00a0 At the slope toe it was channelized by the glacier into a narrow gully.\u00a0 It is clear that the flow eroded out a large amount of material is this area.\u00a0 Upon exiting the channel it spread out across the flood plain before striking the town.\u00a0 Rough parameters from Google Earth suggest a height difference from the crown of the landslide to the channel below of about 500 metres, and a length of about 1200 metres.\u00a0 The scar width is about 75 m, I think, so this is a large landslide.\u00a0 The area downslope of the failure was already a zone of active erosion, so the likelihood of entrainment was very high.<\/p>\n<p>The second event, which came from the glacial area to the northwest, is very different.\u00a0 This was the area of greatest uncertainty, but the images tell us exactly what happened.\u00a0 This is the source area of the debris flow:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/27\/new-high-resolution-images-of-kedarnath-the-cause-of-the-debris-flow-disaster-is-now-clear\/13_06-bhuvan-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6616\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6616\" title=\"13_06 Bhuvan 3\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Bhuvan-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"734\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Bhuvan-3.png 608w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Bhuvan-3-248x300.png 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a>..<\/p>\n<p>The key area here is the source zone, so I&#8217;ve enlarged and annotated this below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/27\/new-high-resolution-images-of-kedarnath-the-cause-of-the-debris-flow-disaster-is-now-clear\/13_06-kedarnath-annotated-image-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6617\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6617\" title=\"13_06 Kedarnath annotated image 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Kedarnath-annotated-image-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"633\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Kedarnath-annotated-image-1.png 633w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Kedarnath-annotated-image-1-247x300.png 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/a>..<\/p>\n<p>This is my interpretation of what happened in this case &#8211; the bullet numbers refer to the numbers on the image above:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In this area fresh, muddy sediment can be seen.\u00a0 This suggest to me that the moraine had created a blocked basin in this area, allowing water to build up in a pool.<\/li>\n<li>Eventually this pool overtopped the moraine barrier &#8211; the site of the breach can be seen at 2.\u00a0 Once overtopping of the barrier occurred, it catastrophically breached.\u00a0 This generated a very rapid release of the impounded water.<\/li>\n<li>The flow was so large that it over-topped the moraine on the other side of the glacial area, such that three flows were formed.\u00a0 One went southwest to join the valley from the earlier debris flow before swinging to the south to strike the town.\u00a0 This exploited an existing channel. The second was a much smaller flow that reoccupied an palaeo-channel.\u00a0 The volume of water and sediment that entered this channel was small, but note that it appears to have entrained debris en route (the channel widens downslope).<\/li>\n<li>Most of the debris flow traveled south down the main channel.\u00a0 The flow must have been huge as there is very substantial erosion in the area of 4.\u00a0 This is the source of many of the boulders now seen in the town.\u00a0 The flow traveled southwards, eventually starting to spread and deposit sediments before striking the town.<\/li>\n<li>Thus, it is clear that Kedarnath was struck by an earlier from from the northeast, then a later flow from the northwest.\u00a0 The latter was highly efficient, in part because of the earlier events and in part because the flow struck the town from two directions simultaneously.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It is also worth noting what happened below Kedarnath.\u00a0 Downstream of the town, the flow was contained within the channel.\u00a0 As a result there was massive erosion of the riverbanks, as seen in the image below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/27\/new-high-resolution-images-of-kedarnath-the-cause-of-the-debris-flow-disaster-is-now-clear\/13_06-bhuvan-4\/\" rel=\"attachment href=\"http:\/\/bhuvan-noeda.nrsc.gov.in\/projects\/flood\/\">Bhuvan<\/a>) from before the disaster:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/27\/new-high-resolution-images-of-kedarnath-the-cause-of-the-debris-flow-disaster-is-now-clear\/13_06-bhuvan-5\/\" rel=\"attachment downstream some of the smaller villages have been utterly destroyed by this event.\u00a0 This is the village of Rambara before the debris flow:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/27\/new-high-resolution-images-of-kedarnath-the-cause-of-the-debris-flow-disaster-is-now-clear\/13_06-bhuvan-6\/\" rel=\"attachment
