Background information about landslides and the earthquake is provided in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/wp-content\/scripts\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com.bouncer.php\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/05\/landslides-from-12th-may-2008-sichuan.html\">post below<\/a>.  I will update this list as new information becomes available.  I would really welcome any information that can be provided &#8211; please email me ( d.n.petley@durham.ac.uk ) or post a comment.<\/p>\n<p>General observation: as feared, landslides have taken a terrible toll in this earthquake.  Reports from almost every town in the mountains suggest that landslides and rockfalls have killed large numbers of people.  For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2008-05\/14\/content_8167209.htm\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Xinhua<\/span><\/a> report:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:verdana;font-size:85%\">The road from <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Dujiangyan<\/span>, a city northwest of the  provincial capital Chengdu, to <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Wenchuan<\/span>, the epicenter, was blocked by rocks and  mud slides, holding up rescue, medical and other disaster relief teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These landslides continue to cause serious <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">disruption<\/span> to the relief efforts.  Again, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Xinhua<\/span> have said:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:verdana;font-size:85%\">The official said the vice governors <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">treked<\/span> into <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Yingxiu<\/span> after many hardships and several close brushes with death.  <\/span><span style=\"font-family:verdana;font-size:85%\">Rocks were still rolling down from the mountains on Wednesday. The highway linking <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Yingxiu<\/span> and <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Dujiangyan<\/span> City was totally paralyzed and a bridge on the highway had collapsed, hampering the arrival of rescuers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A few photographs are starting to emerge of the landslide damage.  For example, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Xinhua<\/span> again have this image, which shows <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">extensive<\/span> fresh landslides:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_05-landslides.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_05-landslides.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">Update: 18th May<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Location: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Donghekou, Ciban and Kangle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"> villages<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\"><br \/><\/span><span>Report: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/ap\/2008\/05\/18\/asia\/AS-GEN-China-Earthquake-Buried-Village.php\">International Herald Tribune<\/a><\/span><br \/>A mountain sheared off by China&#8217;s massive earthquake swallowed the village whole, entombing an unknown number of people inside a huge mound of brown earth. The road to the village ends in a tangled twist of metal and tar. The landscape, eerie and still, shows few signs of human life \u2014 a soiled green floral scarf, a rubber pipe, a log.  Wen Xiaoying, 32, held up a hand as she ticked off the family members buried in the muck before her \u2014 her father, her mother, her sister and her brother-in-law.  The landslide blocked the valley&#8217;s Qingzhu river and a lake was swelling behind the wall of debris, posing the threat that it could break its banks and send torrents cascading into villages downstream.  Locals said two other villages further upstream from Donghekou \u2014 Ciban and Kangle \u2014 suffered the same fate as Donghekou. The three villages were home to about 300 families, locals said.  &#8220;When I saw them the last time, we had a good time together,&#8221; said Wen, a glimmer of a smile showing through as she remembered happier days with her family. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t expect it would be the last time I saw them.&#8221;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\"><\/p>\n<p>Update: 17th May<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Location: Bai He river upstream from Beichuan <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\"><br \/><\/span><span>Report: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/asia\/alarm-as-cracks-appear-in-earthquake-dams-828305.html\">The Independent<\/a><br \/><\/span>Mountains separate Hanwang from Wenchuan county, the epicentre of the quake, which is still cut off after Monday&#8217;s 7.9 magnitude quake and where many thousands are feared dead. Rubble created a 6-meter tall, 30-meter wide and 100-meter long dam, holding back 600,000 cubic meters of water. <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Commentary: valley blocking landslides <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">presenta<\/span> very serious threat in earthquake affected areas. People had no time to run out, and there was nowhere to run, as roads were blocked,&#8221; said a survivor <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">surnamed<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Zhang<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><br \/><span class=\"fbody\"><br \/><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_05-Beichuan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_05-Beichuan.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/><span class=\"fbody\">This is a Google Earth image of <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Beichuan<\/span><\/span> (click on it for a better view).  The site is indeed surrounded by steep mountains.  Note the deep &#8220;bite&#8221; out of the mountain <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\">above<\/span> the town &#8211; could this be an old landslide source zone?  The town has not been completely buried by landslides, as this <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2008-05\/13\/content_8162542.htm\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Xinhua<\/span><\/span><\/a> image shows:<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_05-Beichuan-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_05-Beichuan-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>But it is likely that at least some of the damage has been the result of landslides and rockfalls.<\/p>\n<p>This image appears to show that landslides have been a serious cause of loss of life in Beichuan:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_05-sichuan-landslide-8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_05-sichuan-landslide-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">Original list:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Location: <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Maoxian<\/span><\/span> County, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Aba<\/span><\/span> Prefecture<\/span><br \/>Report: <a href=\"http:\/\/afp.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5iMiSnUYg3umY0Cf3dB9tOxRnoVrg\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">AFP<\/span><\/span><\/a><br \/>At least 37 tourists have been killed and about 15 British tourists were reported missing following the earthquake in China\u2019s <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Sichuan<\/span><\/span> province, emergency management office said Tuesday. \u201cA tourist coach was buried by a landslide in <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Maoxian<\/span><\/span> County, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Aba<\/span><\/span> Prefecture, leaving 37 people dead,\u201d a <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Sichuan<\/span><\/span> provincial emergency management spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Location: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Beichuan<\/span><\/span> County<\/span><br \/>Report: <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2008-05\/13\/content_8157648.htm\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Xinhua<\/span><\/span><\/a><br \/><span><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Beichuan<\/span><\/span> County was by far the worst-hit area in Monday&#8217;s quake. Up to 7,500 people were said to have died in <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Beichuan<\/span><\/span>, and it is believed that the final death toll will be higher.<\/span><span>    &#8220;When the quake hit, the buildings rocked and the mountains collapsed,&#8221; said a survivor <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">surnamed<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Zhang<\/span><\/span>. &#8220;Many buildings at the foot of the mountains were buried and the people inside had no chance to escape.&#8221;<\/span><span>    He said he feared the quake could have killed at least half of the 18,000 people in the county seat.  <\/span><span>&#8220;I saw many people running out of buildings, only to be buried in landslides,&#8221; said Lei <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Xiaoying<\/span><\/span>, another survivor. &#8220;The landslides never stopped because of the continuous aftershocks.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Location: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Yingxiu<\/span><\/span>  Town, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Wenchuan<\/span><\/span> County<\/span><br \/>Report: <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2008-05\/13\/content_8158358.htm\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Xinhua<\/span><\/span><\/a><br \/><span>A village was immediately engulfed by landslide and water level in a reservoir rose rapidly, recalled an earthquake survivor who is still haunted by terrible memories on Tuesday.  <\/span><span>The man named Yang Yang told He <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Biao<\/span><\/span>, deputy  secretary-general of <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Aba<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">prefectural<\/span><\/span> government that he was on a bus in <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Yingxiu<\/span><\/span>  Town, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Wenchuan<\/span><\/span> County of <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Sichuan<\/span><\/span> Province, the epicenter of the earthquake that  claimed at least 9,000 lives.  <\/span><span>&#8220;I saw a village on the mountainside disappear in a  landslide triggered by the earthquake. I saw the rear of a car and the wheels of another.
