{"id":6522,"date":"2013-06-12T07:42:34","date_gmt":"2013-06-12T07:42:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=6522"},"modified":"2013-06-12T07:43:16","modified_gmt":"2013-06-12T07:43:16","slug":"a-catastrophic-landslide-induced-oil-spill-in-ecuador-including-two-shocking-videos-of-the-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/12\/a-catastrophic-landslide-induced-oil-spill-in-ecuador-including-two-shocking-videos-of-the-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"A catastrophic landslide-induced oil spill in Ecuador (including two shocking videos of the pollution)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the largest impacts of landslides occurs when the slide severs an oil or gas pipeline, allowing a release into the environment.\u00a0 Given that pipelines are increasingly being built in landslide-prone terrain this is a real problem.\u00a0 A clear illustration of this occurred in Ecuador on 31st May, when the Trans-Ecuador pipeline ruptured in a landslide.\u00a0 This image, released by Petroecuador, shows the landslide site:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/12\/a-catastrophic-landslide-induced-oil-spill-in-ecuador-including-two-shocking-videos-of-the-pollution\/13_06-ecuador-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6523\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-6523\" title=\"13_06 Ecuador 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Ecuador-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"639\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Ecuador-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/06\/13_06-Ecuador-1-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a>..<\/p>\n<p>If you look carefully the broken pipeline us clearly visible, as is the spilled oil.\u00a0 Note that this was not a particularly large landslide.\u00a0 The volume of oil released to the environment\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterworld.com\/articles\/2013\/06\/drinking-water-in-peru-brazil-threatened-by-oil-spill-in-ecuador.html\">is reported to have been<\/a> about 11,500 barrels, which is about 205,000 litres. The oil flowed into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterworld.com\/articles\/2013\/06\/drinking-water-in-peru-brazil-threatened-by-oil-spill-in-ecuador.html\">Coca River and is now making its way downstream<\/a>.\u00a0 The initial impact was on the city of Coca, which has 80,000 inhabitants, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wtop.com\/628\/3346650\/Ecuador-oil-spill-pollutes-Amazon-tributary\">which had to shut down its drinking water supply<\/a>. \u00a0 Whilst the volumes of oil do not sound huge, the impacts are enormous.\u00a0 The oil is likely to affect river systems in both Peru and Brazil in due course.\u00a0 These two videos, which was posted by Diaro Hoy (an Ecuadorian newspaper) shows in a shocking way just how serious the pollution is:<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3Bcj5sXb_Ek<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X3UlF9URCho<\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>The irony is of course that the cost of identifying and avoiding such likely to be small compared with the costs of losing the pipeline and its oil for a few days, and more importantly with the cost of the environmental damage that this spill will cause.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A landslide induced rupture of the Trans-Ecuador pipeline on 31st May is polluting the Coca River, affecting Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.
