{"id":6497,"date":"2013-06-10T06:45:55","date_gmt":"2013-06-10T06:45:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=6497"},"modified":"2013-06-25T06:04:42","modified_gmt":"2013-06-25T06:04:42","slug":"a-new-landslide-video-showing-the-transition-from-a-soil-slump-to-a-soil-slide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/06\/10\/a-new-landslide-video-showing-the-transition-from-a-soil-slump-to-a-soil-slide\/","title":{"rendered":"A new landslide video showing the transition from a soil slump to a soil slide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Many thanks to Graziella <\/em><em>Devoli <\/em><em>for the heads up on this one<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Across Europe in the last few weeks there has been very heavy rainfall, triggering landslides and floods across a wide area.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpost.com\/dispatch\/news\/afp\/130609\/floods-wreak-havoc-switzerland\">The most recent event occurred in Switzerland overnight<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-22835154\">Germany is experiencing extensive and very damaging floods<\/a> as the water moves through the river system.<\/p>\n<p>Starting on 17th May, a band of rain traveled up across Europe from Northern Italy, where it caused widespread flooding:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/video.corriere.it\/widget\/players\/player_tv_video_iFrame.shtml?width=398&amp;height=223&amp;videoId=http:\/\/static2.video.corriereobjects.it\/widget\/content\/video\/rss\/video_ba5f51e8-beb3-11e2-be2c-cd1fc1fbfe0c.rss&amp;channelName=ITALIA&amp;advChannel=Dall\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"398\" height=\"223\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>On 22nd May, this rainstorm reached southern Norway, where of course the snow melt season is underway.\u00a0 Rain on thawing snow is a combination that is effective in initiating landslides; unsurprisingly landslides, debris flows and failures in fill slopes all occurred.\u00a0 Perhaps most interesting is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ostlendingen.no\/nyheter\/nord-%C3%B8sterdal\/her-gar-jordraset-se-de-enorme-kreftene-1.7920055\">this video of a slump in the affected area<\/a>:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ostlendingen.no\/nyheter\/nord-%C3%B8sterdal\/her-gar-jordraset-se-de-enorme-kreftene-1.7920055\">I have now removed this video as it starts automatically. It can be viewed here.<\/a><br \/>\n..<\/p>\n<p>This video beautifully captures a key element of the process of this type of landslide, just before the runaway failure.\u00a0 This is the rapid change of state of the soil from an intact mass into a very weak, highly mobile flowing material.\u00a0 Note that this is a material change &#8211; the rapid acceleration is not caused by an increase in slope gradient or suchlike.\u00a0 It would be interesting to know more about the materials involved, but a possible explanation is the static liquefaction process that was also responsible for the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/01\/20\/a-review-of-the-brazil-landslides-nova-friburgo\/\">landslides in Brazil in early 2011<\/a>.\u00a0 It is unsurprising that these slides cause loss of life &#8211; something that looks quite unimpressive almost instantaneously becomes a very rapid slide, with huge damage potential.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/live.tv2.no\/nyheter\/50-%C3%A5rs-flom\/#\">This video<\/a>, which I cannot embed, also captures a reporter&#8217;s experience of getting rather too close to the landslides and floods as they occurred.\u00a0 Around the one minute mark some dramatic footage of a debris flow and then a slope collapse event, is included.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recent heavy rainfall in Norway caused extensive landslides.
