{"id":6350,"date":"2013-04-26T05:42:32","date_gmt":"2013-04-26T05:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=6350"},"modified":"2013-04-26T05:42:34","modified_gmt":"2013-04-26T05:42:34","slug":"an-update-on-the-bingham-canyon-mine-landslide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/04\/26\/an-update-on-the-bingham-canyon-mine-landslide\/","title":{"rendered":"An update on the Bingham Canyon mine landslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kennecott held a press conference yesterday to provide an update on the situation with the Bingham Canyon mine landslide.\u00a0 This is well reported in a number of online newspapers, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/865578990\/Kennecott-making-plan-to-recover-from-mine-landslide.html\">Deseret News<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/utah-copper-mine-landslide-hurt-state-economy-19043194#.UXoQTkoa9Xs\">ABC News<\/a>.\u00a0 The openness and transparency of the mine operators in light of this situation remains both admirable and commendable.\u00a0 The nature of the challenges that the operators face in digging out the landslide are notable however.\u00a0 To my mind the most important components of the media briefing were:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The upper part of the slide will have to be removed to make mining safe;<\/li>\n<li>The majority of the ore lies under the slide<\/li>\n<li>The landslide mass is 150 million tonnes (which is about 60 million cubic metres).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The largest mining dump trucks can carry about 350-400 tonnes per load, which means that there hauling even a fraction of the landslide mass is going to be a major challenge.
