{"id":6321,"date":"2013-04-20T08:14:58","date_gmt":"2013-04-20T08:14:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=6321"},"modified":"2013-04-20T08:14:59","modified_gmt":"2013-04-20T08:14:59","slug":"initial-reports-of-landslides-from-the-earthquake-in-sichuan-this-morning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/04\/20\/initial-reports-of-landslides-from-the-earthquake-in-sichuan-this-morning\/","title":{"rendered":"Initial reports of landslides from the earthquake in Sichuan this morning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Magnitude 6.6 earthquake in Sichuan this morning occurred just to the southwest of the area affected by the May 2008.\u00a0 Of course this is not remotely on the scale of that earthquake, but the magnitude and shallow depth will have been sufficient to cause significant damage to the local area.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/usb000gcdd#shakemap\">USGS shakemap<\/a> suggests that this will be the distribution of the shaking:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6322\" style=\"width: 622px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/04\/20\/initial-reports-of-landslides-from-the-earthquake-in-sichuan-this-morning\/13_04-shakemap-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6322\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6322\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6322\" title=\"13_04 shakemap 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-shakemap-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"612\" height=\"718\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-shakemap-1.jpg 612w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-shakemap-1-255x300.jpg 255w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/usb000gcdd#shakemap<\/p><\/div>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>Putting this into Google Earth suggests that the affected area is mountainous, which will inevitably mean that there have been landslides:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/04\/20\/initial-reports-of-landslides-from-the-earthquake-in-sichuan-this-morning\/13_04-china-eq-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6323\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6323\" title=\"13_04 China EQ 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-China-EQ-1-e1366444837969.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a>..<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/news\/Photos+China+Sichuan+province+rocked+powerful+earthquake\/8269890\/story.html\">Vancouver Sun<\/a> has the first landslide image that I have been able to track down, showing a large block that has fallen onto a road:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6324\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/04\/20\/initial-reports-of-landslides-from-the-earthquake-in-sichuan-this-morning\/13_04-china-eq-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6324\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6324\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6324\" title=\"13_04 China EQ 2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-China-EQ-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-China-EQ-2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/04\/13_04-China-EQ-2-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/news\/Photos+China+Sichuan+province+rocked+powerful+earthquake\/8269890\/story.html<\/p><\/div>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/china\/2013-04\/20\/c_132325533.htm\">Xinhua is currently reporting<\/a> two valley-blocking landslides, plus other failures and rockfalls, but with little detail:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Landslides have blocked traffic in many places across the county and two barrier lakes caused by the landslides are posing risks for the rescue efforts, it said&#8230;Vehicles damaged by rolling rocks were seen in the county. Houses along a street in the Lushan county seat have also collapsed.
