detecting large landslides using seismic data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"float: left; padding: 5px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchblogging.org\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.researchblogging.org\/public\/citation_icons\/rb2_large_gray.png\" alt=\"ResearchBlogging.org\" \/><\/a><\/span>A paper was published today in the journal Science by Goran Ekstrom and Colin Stark in which they report on the use of the global seismic network to detect very large landslides in remote areas.\u00a0 Unfortunately the paper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/339\/6126\/1416\">(Ekstrom and Stark 2013)<\/a> is behind a pay wall, so I cannot provide a link to the actual text.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/sciencenow\/2013\/03\/the-shaky-side-of-landslides.html?ref=hp\">Science have put out a press release about the work<\/a>, and there are a couple of other news stories about it (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/view\/generic\/id\/349105\/description\/Landslides_detected_from_afar\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/28093-landslides-seismic-detection.html\">here<\/a> for example).\u00a0 For those that have access to the article, some of the landslides that they describe will be familiar.\u00a0 You will remember that last summer Colin provided data from his ongoing work with Goran that allowed us to unravel the mystery of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/05\/30\/more-information-about-the-seti-river-landslide-and-debris-flood-in-nepal\/\">Seti River landslide in Nepal<\/a>, and subsequently two <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/07\/12\/the-mount-lituya-landslide-in-alaska-an-update\/\">rock avalanches in Alaska<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I was lucky enough to be asked to write the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/339\/6126\/1395.summary?sid=3e49144d-93f0-42cb-88d4-203fb2923b7f\">&#8220;perspectives&#8221; article<\/a> (Petley 2013) that accompanies Ekstrom and Stark (2013), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/339\/6126\/1395.summary?sid=3e49144d-93f0-42cb-88d4-203fb2923b7f\">and this has also now been published in Science<\/a>, so I have been lucky enough to read this paper ahead of its publication.\u00a0 I think that Goran and Colin have produced a really important piece of work.\u00a0 The essence is simple &#8211; very large landslides radiate seismic energy that is detectable using global seismic monitoring instruments.\u00a0 This of course was already known.\u00a0 What is novel about this work is that the authors have used an analytical model to analyse the seismic data to generate information about the landslide.\u00a0 At the moment this analysis uses a series of quite simple assumptions &#8211; I suspect that over the next few years this will become more sophisticated &#8211; but nonetheless it is very revealing.\u00a0 In particular it allows the generation of data on the size, direction of movement, travel distance and velocity of the landslide, as well as giving an indication of the location and of course the timing of the event.<\/p>\n<p>So, to my mind this is important for three reasons.\u00a0 First, we now have a technique that allows large landslides to be automatically detected.\u00a0 Given that these tend to occur in very remote areas, they often go unreported.\u00a0 In fact, in the newspapers today there is a nice example of this (and thanks to Marten Geertsema for making me aware of this one).\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaskapublic.org\/2013\/03\/21\/landslide-transforms-mountain-near-matanuska-glacier\/\">Alaska Public Media today is carrying the story<\/a> of a large landslide near to the Matanuska Glacier &#8220;sometime in February&#8221;.\u00a0 They have this picture, which was taken by staff at Sheep Mountain Lodge:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/03\/22\/a-very-important-new-paper-detecting-large-landslides-using-seismic-data\/13_03-alaska-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6135\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6135\" title=\"13_03 Alaska 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2013\/03\/13_03-Alaska-1-e1363934169478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ability to build a catalogue of these events is very important; at last we will be able to work out just how frequent these events are.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, and perhaps most interestingly, the technique provides for the first time a systematic dataset that allows the dynamics of these landslides to be quantified.\u00a0 At the moment we do not understand how very large landslides move &#8211; they seem to go far further than one would normally expect, so it has been hypothesised that some mechanism acts that permits very long runout distances.\u00a0 We do not know what that mechanism might be, and indeed some argue that no such special mechanism is necessary.\u00a0 Being able to analyse the quantitative data that these landslides provide via the seismic network might help us to answer this question.<\/p>\n<p>And thirdly, the technique allows us to validate our field mapping of landslides.\u00a0 The paper gives the example of a large rock avalanche detected using their technique in the Siachen area of northern Pakistan.\u00a0 Mappig of this landslide from the satellite imagery would indicate that it occurred in one or two large events.\u00a0 The seismic data indicates that it occurred as a much large number of discrete landslides over a few days.\u00a0 Knowing that will allow us to improve our field mapping, which in turn means that our analysis of the remains of ancient landslide deposits, and those triggered by earthquakes, will improve.<\/p>\n<p>So, overall, this is probably the most important landslide paper of the last five years, and I am sure it will generate considerable discussion.\u00a0 I welcome your comments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Z3988\" title=\"ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Ajournal&amp;rft.jtitle=Science&amp;rft_id=info%3Adoi%2F10.1126%2Fscience.1232887&amp;rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fresearchblogging.org&amp;rft.atitle=Simple+Scaling+of+Catastrophic+Landslide+Dynamics&amp;rft.issn=0036-8075&amp;rft.date=2013&amp;rft.volume=339&amp;rft.issue=6126&amp;rft.spage=1416&amp;rft.epage=1419&amp;rft.artnum=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sciencemag.org%2Fcgi%2Fdoi%2F10.1126%2Fscience.1232887&amp;rft.au=Ekstrom%2C+G.&amp;rft.au=Stark%2C+C.&amp;rfe_dat=bpr3.included=1;bpr3.tags=Geosciences\">Ekstrom, G., &amp;
