The title of the presentation is<span style=\"font-style: italic\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;font-style: italic\">Earthquake Induced Landslides &#8211; Lessons from Taiwan and Pakistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The talk is to the various branches of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzgeotechsoc.org.nz\/\">New Zealand <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Geotechnical<\/span> Society<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzsee.org.nz\/\">New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have uploaded the presentation to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.authorstream.com\/\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">authorstream<\/span><\/a> so that it can be downloaded (note that I have now given up using <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">slideshare<\/span> as I have found it too unreliable.  The presentation can be found (and can be downloaded as a <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Powerpoint<\/span> file from) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.authorstream.com\/Presentation\/Dr_Dave-84099-earthquake-induced-landslides-landslide-08-nz-seminar-2scm-science-technology-ppt-powerpoint\/\">here<\/a> and should be viewable below:<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.authorstream.com\/player.swf?p=Dr_Dave-84099-earthquake-induced-landslides-landslide-08-nz-seminar-2scm-science-technology-ppt-powerpoint<br \/><span style=\"font-size:85%\">Uploaded on <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">authorSTREAM<\/span> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.authorstream.com\/User-Presentations\/Dr_Dave\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"More presentations by Dr_Dave on authorSTREAM\">Dr_Dave<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Abstract:<\/span><b><span style=\"line-height: 115%;font-size:12\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-family:arial\">Earthquake induced landslides \u2013 lessons from Taiwan and Pakistan<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left\"> <\/div>\n<p>The recent <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Wenchuan<\/span> earthquake in <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Sichuan<\/span> Province of China has highlighted the impact of seismically-triggered landslides in mountain environments.<span> <\/span>In China, it is now estimated that approximately 28,000 fatalities, representing about 35% of the deaths in the earthquake, occurred as a result of burial by mass movements.<span> <\/span>In addition, the blockage of all of the mountain roads by landslides meant that rescue of buried victims in the so-called \u201cgolden\u201d 24 hours was seriously impeded, and more than 150 rescuers were subsequent killed by slides triggered by aftershocks.<span> <\/span>This presentation seeks to examine the occurrence of landslides in two other major seismic events, namely the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake in Taiwan and the 2005 Kashmir earthquake in Pakistan.<span> <\/span>Using field data from both sites, the occurrence of landslides induced by the earthquake is examined in both space and time.<span> <\/span>It is shown that the distributions of landslides are rather different in the two cases, even though they earthquakes themselves were of similar magnitudes.<span> <\/span>The reasons for this difference are explored, in particular in relation to topographic controls on the magnitude of earthquake accelerations on slopes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\">In the second part of the presentation, the occurrence of landslides in the years following the earthquakes is explored.<span> <\/span>It is shown that there is a notable increase in the occurrence of landslides in the aftermath of the seismic event, and that these landslides release large volumes of sediment into the river system.<span> <\/span>This increase in landslide activity can have a major impact on the rehabilitation of earthquake-affected areas for long periods of time.<span> <\/span>Thus, there is a need to improve preparation for earthquakes in landslide-prone areas and to recognise that the impacts of such events are prolonged, rendering the recovery phase rather difficult from an engineering perspective.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week I am giving three presentations in New Zealand &#8211; first in Christchurch today, then Wellington tomorrow and Auckland on Thursday.
