href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/01\/21\/first-reports-of-a-large-landslide-on-mount-cook-in-new-zealand\/\">Mount Dixon in the Mount Cook National Park in New Zealand on Monda<\/a>y has now been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/the-press\/national\/8205275\/Awe-inspiring-rockfall-narrowly-misses-hut\">photographed and videoed in some detail<\/a>, providing a clearer picture of what happened.\u00a0 This is a very impressive landslide with a large fall height and long runout distance, although as far as I can see there is nothing surprising about its behaviour.\u00a0 A good starting reference point is the following <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s9G6aI49Le0\">Youtube video<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s9G6aI49Le0<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Landslide source<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The mass appears to have fallen from a near vertical cliff on the west face of the southern flank of Mount Dixon, removing a section of the ridge-top in the process.\u00a0 The scar left by this section can be seen in the image below <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/the-press\/national\/8205275\/Awe-inspiring-rockfall-narrowly-misses-hut\">(from here)<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/01\/23\/an-analysis-based-on-images-and-video-of-the-mount-cook-national-park-landslide-on-monday\/12_01-mount-dixon-2\/\" rel=\"attachment href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/01\/23\/an-analysis-based-on-images-and-video-of-the-mount-cook-national-park-landslide-on-monday\/13_01-mount-dixon-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5826\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5826\" title=\"13_01 Mount Dixon 3\" height<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The map below <a href=\"http:\/\/rnzaf.proboards.com\/index.cgi?action=display&amp;board=general&amp;thread=18006&amp;page=1#179166\">(from here)<\/a> shows the area affected by the landslide.\u00a0 This suggests a maximum fall height of about 450-500 metres from the ridge to the foot of the steep slope:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/01\/23\/an-analysis-based-on-images-and-video-of-the-mount-cook-national-park-landslide-on-monday\/12_01-mount-dixon-map\/\" rel=\"attachment sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The photo above suggests that the topography of the slope may have concentrated the debris into a comparatively small initial impact zone.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.3news.co.nz\/Mt-Cook-landslide-ends-climbing-season\/tabid\/423\/articleID\/284007\/Default.aspx\">3News has a better image<\/a> of the source zone &#8211; it is not difficult to understand why this mass was unstable:<\/p>\n<p><a sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The track appears to have two components &#8211; a concentrated main zone from the focused impact area at the slope toe, in which the landslide appears to have removed all of the surface layers of snow and ice, and a more dispersed zone on each side in which the landslide appears to have run across the snow without eroding it away.\u00a0 The landslide has clearly followed the topography.\u00a0 There is an interesting transition at the foot of the concentrated zone (just below and to the left of the centre of the image above) at which the landslide appears to have stopped eroding the snow and ice and to have started to deposit, but this is not clearly resolved on the photos.\u00a0 The landslide track is about 3 km with a total vertical change (from crown to toe) of about 800 metres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The runout zone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The termination of the landslide has a quite beautiful structure, with a series of lobes containing flowlines.\u00a0 It is clear that the landslide ran out of energy when the slope gradient reduced.\u00a0 On the left of the image above the flow has started to travel downslope in two or so lobes as the glacier steeoened, but these appear to have been too small to maintain the flow.\u00a0 The deposit, shown in the image below (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/the-press\/national\/8205275\/Awe-inspiring-rockfall-narrowly-misses-hut\">from here<\/a>), is clearly a mixture of ice, rock and snow.\u00a0 Notice how the dust deposit (which provides a fuzzy edge to the landslide further upslope, appears to disappear in the lower reaches.\u00a0 In all cases at the toe of the landslide the edge of the lobes of the deposit seems to consist of bulldozed snow\u00a0 There seems to be more rock below the main track area (on the right of the image) below than in the other sections (especially to the left of the image below).\u00a0 The Plateau Hut, also shown on the map above, is circled.\u00a0 If nothing else it provides a good scale for the landslide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/01\/23\/an-analysis-based-on-images-and-video-of-the-mount-cook-national-park-landslide-on-monday\/12_01-mount-dixon-7\/\" rel=\"attachment
