explanation and to Ellen Hardy for both bringing this to my attention and linking me to Dana.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On 16th January heavy rainfall in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/grsm\/index.htm\">Great Smoky Mountains National Park<\/a> in North Carolina triggered a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbir.com\/news\/article\/249676\/2\/Football-size-landslide-takes-out-part-of-US-441\">large landslide that destroyed about 200 m of Newfound Gap Road (U.S. 441)<\/a>.\u00a0 As the National Parks Service estimate that the landslide has a volume of about 70,000 cubic metres, and at least some landslide activity is continuing, it will take a while to reopen the road.\u00a0 The
