{"id":5602,"date":"2012-12-04T00:03:08","date_gmt":"2012-12-04T00:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=5602"},"modified":"2012-12-04T00:03:50","modified_gmt":"2012-12-04T00:03:50","slug":"super-typhoon-bopha-pablo-makes-landfall-in-the-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/12\/04\/super-typhoon-bopha-pablo-makes-landfall-in-the-philippines\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Typhoon Bopha (Pablo) makes landfall in the Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unfortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/12\/02\/an-update-on-typhoon-bopha-as-it-heads-towards-the-philippines\/\">Typhoon Bopha<\/a> (known as Pablo in the Philippines) rapidly intensified in the few hours before making landfall,managing to achieve Super Typhoon (Category 5) status.\u00a0 Landfalling super typhoons have the potential to be very damaging.\u00a0 This storm is exceptional in many ways, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/blog\/JeffMasters\/archive.html?year=2012&amp;month=12\">Jeff Masters outlined in his blog yesterday<\/a>.\u00a0 In a year of extreme events worldwide I suppose another should not be a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>As forecast, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/hurricane\/wp201226.asp?MR=1\">storm made landfall on the Mindanao in the Philippines<\/a>, and is now tracking west-northwest across the island:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/12\/04\/super-typhoon-bopha-pablo-makes-landfall-in-the-philippines\/12_12-bopha-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5603\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5603\" title=\"12_12 Bopha 4\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/12\/12_12-Bopha-4.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/12\/12_12-Bopha-4.gif 640w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/12\/12_12-Bopha-4-300x225.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In so doing it is bringing both very damaging winds and very intense rainfall.\u00a0 Landslides and floods are inevitable, although at this stage it is difficult to forecast how bad these will be.\u00a0 It will range somewhere between bad (but manageable) and catastrophic.\u00a0 There are too many uncertainties to know which will apply, but the precedent from the much weaker <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/12\/19\/impacts-of-tropical-storm-washi-in-the-philippines\/\">Tropical Storm Washi a year ago<\/a> is not promising.\u00a0 The only positive sides to this story are that there has been at least some element of preparedness and that the storm is moving fast, which may reduce the rainfall.\u00a0 This is the most intense typhoon to strike Mindanao in recorded history though, so the outcome could be very serious.<\/p>\n<p>Three sources of useful information as the storm tracks across the island:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pagasa.dost.gov.ph\/wb\/tcupdate.shtml\">PAGASA<\/a> &#8211; the national meteorological organisation in the Philippines<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndrrmc.gov.ph\/\">NDRRMC<\/a> &#8211; the national disaster management organisation in the Philippines (who are very proactive i their use of the web)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/trmm.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\">TRMM <\/a>&#8211; satellite monitoring of tropical rainfall<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Super typhoon Bopha has made landfall on Mindanao in the Philippines.
