&#8230;deep groundwater levels will now be rising, so don\u2019t be at all surprised if there are reports of larger landslide movements over the next few months.\u00a0 Places such as Dorset and the Isle of Wight, where there are large coastal landslide systems, will be particularly vulnerable.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And sure enough, the BBC website today has an article that starts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A section of coastline in Dorset has been cordoned off after a crack was seen in a cliff.\u00a0 Coastguards called to Charmouth on Wednesday put up warning signs and Dorset County Council is considering if further action is needed.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be too impressed &#8211; that deeper landslide systems will become more active was inevitable, so this was an easy call to make.\u00a0 Charmouth is a well-known landslide hotspot, as the Google Earth image below shows.\u00a0 Indeed, it is one of the places that all landslide scientists should visit:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/12\/01\/further-landslide-movement-in-dorset-england\/12_12-charmouth-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5579\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5579\" title=\"12_12 Charmouth 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/12\/12_12-Charmouth-1-e1354350583978.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">. . .65 ..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span> To the west of the town is the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/homepages.lboro.ac.uk\/~cvjhc\/ven.html\">Black Ven landslide complex<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/12\/01\/further-landslide-movement-in-dorset-england\/12_12-charmouth-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5580\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5580\" title=\"12_12 Charmouth 2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/12\/12_12-Charmouth-2-e1354350782544.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To the east is the Stonebarrow landslide:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/12\/01\/further-landslide-movement-in-dorset-england\/12_12-charmouth-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5581\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5581\" title=\"12_12 Charmouth 3\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/12\/12_12-Charmouth-3-e1354350874662.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment it is not at all clear where the recently reported movement has occurred, or indeed the nature of the crack that has opened up.\u00a0 I suspect we&#8217;ll see more such reports in the next few months.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my post yesterday I noted that: &#8221;
