{"id":5565,"date":"2012-11-30T00:01:24","date_gmt":"2012-11-30T00:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=5565"},"modified":"2012-11-29T23:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-11-29T23:00:00","slug":"multiple-landslides-in-the-uk-in-the-last-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/30\/multiple-landslides-in-the-uk-in-the-last-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiple landslides in the UK in the last week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The exceptional rainfall event in the UK (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/cottages-overlooking-whitby-harbour-being-1463717\">there is a fantastic gallery of images of the floods at the bottom of this page<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/28\/a-damaging-landslide-in-whitby-england-triggered-by-recent-heavy-rainfall\/\">about which I blogged yesterday<\/a> has been responsible for triggering landslides across the country.\u00a0 Indeed, I have never known so many landslides to occur in the UK &#8211; it is a very unusual period.\u00a0 The highest profile event occurred at Whitby, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/28\/a-damaging-landslide-in-whitby-england-triggered-by-recent-heavy-rainfall\/\">as covered in my post yesterda<\/a>y, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/10079617.Brick_by_brick_demolition_of_stricken_cottages_about_to_begin\/\">news today is that the demolition of the houses has started<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I thought it would be interesting to pull togather a selection of other newsworthy landslides.\u00a0 There are many more in addition to this set:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Landslides on the main railway line in Teignmouth, Devon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The main railway line from London to Cornwall has been repeatedly disrupted by landslides.\u00a0 This is the same section of line that I featured in my <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/08\/15\/landslides-in-art-part-14-a-victorian-railway-painting\/\">landslides in art series a few weeks ago<\/a>. The most recent landslide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisissouthdevon.co.uk\/Fresh-landslip-closes-railway-line-Teignmouth\/story-17456354-detail\/story.html\">occurred yesterday<\/a>, and is shown below.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-devon-20538711\">BBC News website reports<\/a> that movement has continued and that the site is now being examined by an roped-access team.\u00a0 The line is not likely to reopen until Saturday.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5566\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/30\/multiple-landslides-in-the-uk-in-the-last-week\/12_10-uk-slide-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5566\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5566\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5566\" title=\"12_10 UK slide 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_10-UK-slide-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_10-UK-slide-1.jpg 464w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_10-UK-slide-1-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5566\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-devon-20538711<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>2. A rockfall in Shropshire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, over in Shropshire the key road into the World Heritage site at Ironbridge has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-shropshire-20538197\">blocked by a rockfall at Jiggers Bank<\/a>.\u00a0 This stretch of road has had repeated rockfall problems and has been subject to a number of remediation exercises, as the image below shows.\u00a0 The reports suggest that the most recent event was on a section of the slope that had not been engineered.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shropshirelive.com\/2012\/11\/29\/jiggers-bank-to-remain-closed-following-rockfall\/\">The road is still closed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5567\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/30\/multiple-landslides-in-the-uk-in-the-last-week\/12_11-uk-slide-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5567\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5567\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5567\" title=\"12_11 UK slide 2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-UK-slide-2-e1354228023667.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"372\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.shropshirelive.com\/2012\/11\/29\/jiggers-bank-to-remain-closed-following-rockfall\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>3. Another railway line landslide, this time in West Sussex<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, an important commuter railway line suffered a small embankment failure between Holmwood and Dorking, near to Horsham in West Sussex.\u00a0 Although not large, the landslide shifted ballast from under the sleepers, leaving the track unusable.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.streathamguardian.co.uk\/news\/10079114.Commuters_delayed_amid_emergency_timetable_teething_problems\/\">This has caused considerable disruption<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5568\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/30\/multiple-landslides-in-the-uk-in-the-last-week\/12_11-uk-slide-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5568\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5568\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5568\" title=\"12_11 UK slide 3\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-UK-slide-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-UK-slide-3.jpg 480w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-UK-slide-3-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.streathamguardian.co.uk\/news\/10079114.Commuters_delayed_amid_emergency_timetable_teething_problems\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>4. And yet another railway landslide, this time in Gloucestershire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A very similar landslide to that described above occurred at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisisbristol.co.uk\/Continued-delays-rail-landslip-Bristol-Swindon\/story-17454430-detail\/story.html\">Westerleigh junction in Gloucestershire<\/a>, closing one of the two tracks between Bristol and Swindon.\u00a0 This landslide appears to be larger than the one at Horsham, but has not retrogressed to the point at which the track is undermined.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisisbristol.co.uk\/Continued-delays-rail-landslip-Bristol-Swindon\/story-17454430-detail\/story.html\">The article notes that Network Rail<\/a>, who are responsible for track maintenance, have estimated that the repair will need 4000 tonnes of ballast.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5569\" style=\"width: 406px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/30\/multiple-landslides-in-the-uk-in-the-last-week\/12_11-uk-slide-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5569\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5569\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5569\" title=\"12_11 UK slide 4\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-UK-slide-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-UK-slide-4.jpg 396w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-UK-slide-4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.thisisbristol.co.uk\/Continued-delays-rail-landslip-Bristol-Swindon\/story-17454430-detail\/story.html<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>5.
