Highway 97 in British Columbia is currently being upgraded through the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Okanagan<\/span> Valley (Fig. 1).  This project is being undertaken by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arthon.com\/\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Arthon<\/span><\/a> &#8211; their project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arthon.com\/projects\/summerland\/index.html\">website<\/a> describes this as:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-family:arial\">&#8220;Four lane roadworks and 1,000,000 m3 rock removal over a 7 km section of <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">BC&#8217;s<\/span> main north-south highway corridor.  The B.C. Ministry of Transportation awarded <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Arthon<\/span> Contractors Inc. a $38.6 MM contract to complete roadway construction by summer 2009&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_10-highway-97c.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer;width: 400px;height: 265px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_10-highway-97c.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-family:arial\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Fig. 1:<\/span> Google Earth image of the location of the problematic slope on Highway 97.<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-family:arial\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size:100%\"><span style=\"font-family:georgia\">The rock removal appears to be a widening exercise in which a substantial amount of rock has been removed to create a platform.  Unfortunately, last Friday the contractors noticed that a crack had appeared in the slope above the works at the location shown on Fig. 2.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_10-highway-57a.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer;width: 400px;height: 265px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/08_10-highway-57a.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-family:arial\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Fig. 2:<\/span> Google Earth perspective view of the area of the unstable slope before the slope cutting had commenced.  <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-family:arial\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"><span style=\"font-family:georgia\"><br \/>The crack in question is not insubstantial. One possibility is that the slope will collapse completely, it may keep creeping or it may stop.  Whatever happens the authorities have quite a challenge on their hands to know how to deal with this slope.  The pattern of displacement against time is one tool that could be used in this case.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll post again as this develops.
