spread failures from earthquakes in Burma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>NB: this is a corrected post &#8211; it is now clear that the lateral spreading images are from the 2011 Burma earthquake, not the November 2012 event.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is comparatively little news emerging from Burma (Myanmar) following the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/11\/first-news-of-the-burma-earthquake-and-an-update-on-landslides-from-the-guatemala-earthquake\/\">earthquake yesterday<\/a>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/news\/asia\/320845\/myanmar-struggles-to-reach-quake-victims\">current estimates<\/a> put the loss of life at about 13 people, although communications with remote communities seem to be rather challenging.\u00a0 The most eye-catching event was the collapse of an under-construction bridge across the Irrawaddy River near Sint Ku, killing four construction href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/12\/lateral-spread-failures-from-the-burma-earthquake\/12_11-burma-1-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5465\"><img loading=\"lazy\" failures during the earthquake.\u00a0 This image,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nation.com.pk\/pakistan-news-newspaper-daily-english-online\/international\/12-Nov-2012\/strong-myanmar-quake-kills-13\"> from here<\/a>, appears to show such a failure:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/12\/lateral-spread-failures-from-the-burma-earthquake\/12_11-burma-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5480\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5480\" title=\"12_11 Burma 5\" (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Previous<\/strong><\/em> earthquakes in Burma have shown impressive <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/learn\/glossary\/?term=lateral%20spread%20or%20flow\">lateral spreading<\/a>.\u00a0 This image for example, from an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shwedarling.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/26\/photos-of-earthquake-in-myanmar-24-march-2011\/\">excellent gallery of images available here from the 24th March 2011 event<\/a>, probably shows a lateral spread failure:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/12\/lateral-spread-failures-from-the-burma-earthquake\/12_11-burma-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5466\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5466\" title=\"12_11 Burma 2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-Burma-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Note the displacement of the white lines, which indicates that the area delineated by the tension crack has displaced laterally to the left.\u00a0 There is another nice example, from a different location, although note that there may also be an element of settlement in the fill under the road here as well:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/12\/lateral-spread-failures-from-the-burma-earthquake\/12_11-burma-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5467\"><img loading=\"lazy\" (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The behaviour of these lateral spread failures during aftershocks is highly complex, not least because retrogression of the spread can cause existing tension cracks to close.\u00a0 For this reason, it is fair to say that\u00a0 this is not an officially-recommended approach to demonstrating the size of a tension crack:<\/p>\n<div
