The Burma earthquake<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/usc000dqqw\">M = 6.8 earthquake in Burma<\/a> (I refuse to use the term Myanmar) this morning occurred at a depth of less than 10 km according the USGS, which should suggest that the impact has not been insignificant.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/usc000dqqw#pager\">PAGER system calculates<\/a> a 32% likelihood on 1 to 100 fatalities and a 32% likelihood of 100 to 1000 fatalities.\u00a0 However, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.voanews.com\/breaking-news\/2012\/11\/11\/at-least-5-dead-several-missing-after-burma-quake\/\">initial reports suggest losses at the bottom end of the scale<\/a>, although it is early days.\u00a0 The location of the epicentre, shown below, suggests that landslides might be an issue in at least a part of the area:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/11\/first-news-of-the-burma-earthquake-and-an-update-on-landslides-from-the-guatemala-earthquake\/12_11-burma-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5458\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5458\" title=\"12_11 Burma 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-Burma-1-e1352619342838.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.
