{"id":5413,"date":"2012-11-03T00:01:26","date_gmt":"2012-11-03T00:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=5413"},"modified":"2012-11-02T08:48:40","modified_gmt":"2012-11-02T08:48:40","slug":"fatal-landslides-in-nepal-in-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/03\/fatal-landslides-in-nepal-in-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"Fatal landslides in Nepal in 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Regular readers will know that I have long had an interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/28\/landslide-losses-in-nepal\/\">landslides in Nepal<\/a>, and indeed that<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/t1187583p1m68v72\/\"> I wrote a paper (Petley et al. 2007) a few years ago that explored in detail trends in landslide occurrence there<\/a>.\u00a0 Nepal is particularly interesting as the combination of topography and climate mean that it is very landslide prone, and the impacts are exacerbated by the vulnerability of the population.\u00a0 As an aside, I am genuinely delighted that I&#8217;ll be working there again on the <a href=\"http:\/\/ewfproject.wordpress.com\/\">Earthquakes Without Frontiers project<\/a> over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>In Nepal the end of October marks the end of the landslide season as the monsoon retreats, to be replaced by cold but dry conditions.\u00a0 Hence, this is a good time to review the impact of landslides this year using my database of fatality-inducing failures.\u00a0 The provisional headline figures are that I have recorded 22 landslide events that caused one or more fatality in Nepal in 2012 to date, with a total of 130 deaths.\u00a0 The latter figure is dominated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/05\/23\/understanding-the-seti-river-landslide-in-nepal\/\">Seti River event back in May<\/a>, which was responsible for 72 deaths.\u00a0 The graph below shows the number of people killed by landslides and the number of fatality-inducing landslide events per year in Nepal from 1980 to the present.\u00a0 It shows that 2012 was a low impact year in comparison with recent years:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/03\/fatal-landslides-in-nepal-in-2012\/12_11-nepal-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5414\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5414\" title=\"12_11 Nepal 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-Nepal-1-e1351844684280.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a>The reason is almost certainly that rainfall associated with the SW Monsoon this year was well below average.\u00a0 This is the latest set of monsoon maps from India from Monsoon Online, showing that across India the monsoon was about :<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/03\/fatal-landslides-in-nepal-in-2012\/12_11-monsoon-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5415\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-5415\" title=\"12_11 Monsoon 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/11\/12_11-Monsoon-1-e1351845102311.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"494\" \/><\/a>Unfortunately, whilst this low-level of rainfall is good for landslides and floods, it is bad news in terms of irrigation of crops.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wfp.org\/node\/3532\/4656\/331296\">The harvest is thought to have been about 10% below expectations this year.<\/a>\u00a0 As a result, Nepal is facing severe food price inflation, which will lead to high levels of hardship for those living in poverty there.<\/p>\n<p>Landslide losses in Nepal are very variable, dominated from year to year by the patterns of the SW monsoon.\u00a0 In periods when the monsoon is intense the number of landslides increases dramatically.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the lower level of\u00a0 losses this year are very unlikely to indicate that landslide hazards are diminishing, but rather that the forcing mechanisms are operating at a lower level.\u00a0 It is likely that losses will become high again when the monsoon intensity is high.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Petley, D.N., Hearn, G.J., Hart, A., Rosser, N.J., Dunning, S.A., Oven, K. &amp; Mitchell, W.A. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/geography\/staff\/geogstaffhidden\/?mode=pdetail&amp;id=354&amp;sid=354&amp;pdetail=48370\">Trends in landslide occurence in Nepal<\/a>. <em>Natural Hazards<\/em>. 2007;43:23-44.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A review of landslide losses in Nepal in 2012 in comparison with the last 30 years.
