{"id":5241,"date":"2012-09-27T01:09:56","date_gmt":"2012-09-27T01:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=5241"},"modified":"2012-09-27T06:53:19","modified_gmt":"2012-09-27T06:53:19","slug":"exceptional-erosion-undercuts-an-apartment-block-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/09\/27\/exceptional-erosion-undercuts-an-apartment-block-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Exceptional erosion undercuts an apartment block in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Resuming the spell of exceptional rainfall from the early summer in the UK, northern England has been affected by an unusually intense low pressure system over the last two days, bringing unusually heavy rainfall.\u00a0 Worst affected has been my home area, NE England, with extensive flooding and at least some landslides.\u00a0 Perhaps the most interesting event appears to have been unusually intensive erosion associated with very high stream flows in the Newburn area of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.\u00a0 In particular, a set of modern apartments <a href=\"http:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/parts-of-uk-swamped-as-torrential-downpours-continue\">have been affected by intense erosion<\/a>, leaving them in a precarious position supported only by the piles that formed their foundations:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/09\/27\/exceptional-erosion-undercuts-an-apartment-block-in-the-uk\/12_09-newburn-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5242\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5242\" title=\"12_09 Newburn 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/09\/12_09-Newburn-1-e1348696971366.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-19725625\">The BBC have a really good video of the site from the air, which is much more dramatic than the above image<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/09\/27\/exceptional-erosion-undercuts-an-apartment-block-in-the-uk\/12_09-newburn-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5243\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5243\" title=\"12_09 Newburn 2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/09\/12_09-Newburn-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/09\/12_09-Newburn-2.png 433w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/09\/12_09-Newburn-2-300x151.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/multimedia\/news\/local-news\/2012\/09\/25\/floodwaters-at-spencer-court-in-newburn-72703-31904982\/#3\">See also the slideshow here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Chronicle reports that these flats have been suffering problems since the rains in the early summer, and were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/north-east-news\/evening-chronicle-news\/2012\/06\/11\/spencer-court-evacuated-as-flood-hits-newburn-flats-72703-31157282\/\">initially evacuated in June<\/a>.\u00a0 The suggestion is that it is the failure of the culverts to handle peak flows that is responsible for the problem (I have no way of knowing if this is the case).\u00a0 The pipes that are visible above suggests that measures were being taken to try to deal with flooding.\u00a0 However, the Google Earth imagery from <del>March 2012\u00a0<\/del> summer 2012 [ correction as it is likely that the imagery date is incorrect] of the site shows multiple pipes in place in the area around the flats<del>, perhaps suggesting that the problems may have been occurring for a while<\/del>.:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/09\/27\/exceptional-erosion-undercuts-an-apartment-block-in-the-uk\/12_09-newburn-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5246\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5246\" title=\"12_09 Newburn 3\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/09\/12_09-Newburn-3-e1348698124175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a>Managing water is such situations is critical.\u00a0 Once water starts to erode loose material, such as fill, then the process is difficult to arrest.\u00a0 This was displayed beautifully by this <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/05\/18\/culvert-failure-video\/\">culvert failure from the US in 2009<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exclusive: Extended Video Of Freeport Road Collapse\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p_uqPR4Ir5o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
