this is an occasional series of images depicting the ways in which landslides appear in art works.<\/p>\n<p>In this edition I have chosen to feature a colour lithograph dating from 1852 or 1853:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/08\/15\/landslides-in-art-part-14-a-victorian-railway-painting\/12_08-art-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5085\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5085\" title=\"12_08 Art 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/08\/12_08-Art-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/08\/12_08-Art-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/08\/12_08-Art-1-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>The image, for which I do not have the author, is entitled &#8220;South Devon Railway: Landslip near the Parson and Clerk Rock, Dec. 29th 1852&#8221;.\u00a0 The image appears to show a significant landslide on a coastal cliff in South Devon on the UK.\u00a0 The failure appears to consist primarily of large boulders, and the form of the scarp suggests perhaps a collapse defined by an existing defect, such as a sub-vertical joint.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Devon_Railway_Company\">South Devon Railway<\/a> is not the same as the tourist line that now carries the same name.\u00a0 This was the line between Exeter and Plymouth and Torquay in southern England, engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.\u00a0 The line was opened in stages in the period from 1846 to 1849.\u00a0 It remains in use today.\u00a0 Thus the collapse appears to have occurred only a few years after construction, with the trigger being a large storm according to newspaper reports of the time.\u00a0 Think this is the site as it is today, based on a Google Earth perspective view.\u00a0 What appears to be the scar of the landslide in 1852 is still visible:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/08\/15\/landslides-in-art-part-14-a-victorian-railway-painting\/12_08-art-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5086\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5086\" title=\"12_08 Art 2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/08\/12_08-Art-2-e1345014449131.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest edition of landslides in art, this time featuring a Victorian lithograph from Devon, Southern England<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":5085,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[502,585,133],"class_list":["post-5084","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-art","tag-devon","tag-uk"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5084","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/22"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5084"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5084\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/5085"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5084"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5084"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5084"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
