The Mount Lituya landslide in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the last few days <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/07\/12\/the-mount-lituya-landslide-in-alaska-an-update\/\">this landslide<\/a> , which of course <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/06\/14\/another-very-large-landslide-this-time-on-the-canada-alaska-border-can-you-help\/\">I reported first on this blog<\/a>, has received a fair amount of media coverage (and some rather peculiar hype about its size).\u00a0 However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalparkstraveler.com\/2012\/07\/pilots-video-provides-close-ups-landslide-glacier-bay-national-park10224\">National Parks Traveler highlighted a video<\/a> of the landslide shot by a local pilot who has flown up and down the landslide.\u00a0 It is stunning, but you might want to turn off your computer&#8217;s sound system:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rock Slide 6-20-2012\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KDz7P9uNFJg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. The 21st May Hubbard Glacier fjord landslide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is another landslide that was first reported on this blog.\u00a0 An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=448259101858896&amp;set=a.272286276122847.72559.147587328592743&amp;type=3&amp;theater\">aerial image of this landslide has now been posted on Facebook<\/a> by the staff of\u00a0 Wrangell-St. Elias National Park &amp; Preserve:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/07\/16\/stunning-images-of-four-recent-landslides\/12_07-canada-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4969\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4969\" title=\"12_07 Canada 5\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/07\/12_07-Canada-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/07\/12_07-Canada-5.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/07\/12_07-Canada-5-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>This is a really fascinating, and really unusual, landslide in terms of its flow dynamics.\u00a0 Why did it turn right rather than flowing straight on?<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. The Johnsons Landing landslide in Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have covered this a<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/07\/16\/a-dramatic-video-of-a-secondary-failure-of-the-johnsons-landing-landslide-in-canada\/\"> couple of times<\/a> over the<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/07\/13\/a-probably-fatal-landslide-in-johnsons-landing-kootenay-lake-bc-canada-yesterday\/\"> last few days<\/a>.\u00a0 This really remarkable image of the area in which the buried houses are located was released by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca\/info-pages\/media-contacts.html\">Emergency Info BC<\/a> this weekend:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/07\/16\/stunning-images-of-four-recent-landslides\/12_07-canada-6\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4970\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4970\" title=\"12_07 Canada 6\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/07\/12_07-Canada-6-e1342443989689.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a>There are some really interesting flow structures that indicate quite well what happened at this location I think.\u00a0 There are other very interesting images on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/emergencyinfobc\/7559168938\/in\/set-72157630550941830\/\">Flickr page<\/a>, including this one of the source area and track:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/07\/16\/stunning-images-of-four-recent-landslides\/12_07-canada-7\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4975\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4975\" title=\"12_07 Canada 7\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/07\/12_07-Canada-7-e1342445027713.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a>The trim line on the right side if the image on this image suggests that a very high wave of material must have traveled down this valley, which would also fit with the way that the landslide left the main channel in the area of the houses.\u00a0 I wonder what the mechanism was for such a dramatic failure event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.
