{"id":493,"date":"2009-01-08T08:24:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-08T08:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/01\/08\/guatemala-landslide\/"},"modified":"2010-10-21T13:37:46","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T17:37:46","slug":"guatemala-landslide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/01\/08\/guatemala-landslide\/","title":{"rendered":"Guatemala landslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/wp-content\/scripts\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com.bouncer.php\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/another-video-of-guatemala-landslide.html\">Guatemala landslide<\/a> now fades from media prominence, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetark.com\/enviro-news\/item\/51113\">Reuters<\/a> have released probably the best image to date of the landslide site:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/09_01-guatemala-image-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer;width: 400px;height: 300px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/09_01-guatemala-image-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>It is now clear that this was a a large rockslide (not a mudslide as reported elsewhere).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/nphotos\/slideshow\/photo\/\/090106\/481\/bb9533885ddf4755a259bcc1e90e8012\/\">AP<\/a> have released a good image of the site:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/09_01-guatemala-image-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer;width: 399px;height: 266px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/09_01-guatemala-image-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>Whilst this <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/nphotos\/slideshow\/photo\/\/090105\/ids_photos_wl\/r1479796329.jpg\/\">Reuters<\/a> image shows the runout of the landslide quite well:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/09_01-guatemala-image-7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer;width: 400px;height: 277px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/09_01-guatemala-image-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conred.org\/principal.php\">CONRED<\/a> released this image of the site to show the ongoing rockfall activity that caused suspension of rescue operations:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/09_01-guatemala-image-8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer;width: 400px;height: 300px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/09_01-guatemala-image-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Meanwhile the number of recovered victims has now reached 37.  About 50 victims remain buried in the debris.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plenglish.com\/article.asp?ID=%7B8142138A-CEAA-4043-9130-18DFABA267C9%7D&amp;language=EN\">various reports<\/a> that an evaluation of the site has determined that the area around the landslide is too dangerous for habitation.  My suspcicion is that this is right &#8211; the landslide appears to me to have occurred in a much larger landslide scar.
