{"id":4855,"date":"2012-06-14T07:18:38","date_gmt":"2012-06-14T07:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=4855"},"modified":"2012-06-14T07:18:40","modified_gmt":"2012-06-14T07:18:40","slug":"another-very-large-landslide-this-time-on-the-canada-alaska-border-can-you-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/06\/14\/another-very-large-landslide-this-time-on-the-canada-alaska-border-can-you-help\/","title":{"rendered":"Another very large landslide &#8211; this time on the Canada \/ Alaska border &#8211; can you help?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the last few weeks I have highlighted two large landslides, one in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/05\/30\/more-information-about-the-seti-river-landslide-and-debris-flood-in-nepal\/\">Nepal<\/a> and one in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/05\/24\/another-teleseismic-landslide-this-time-in-alaska\/\">Alaska<\/a>, that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldeo.columbia.edu\/user\/cstark\">Colin Stark<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldeo.columbia.edu\/~ekstrom\/\">Goran Ekstrom<\/a> detected remotely using seismic instruments (there is a great summary of the Nepal work on the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ei.columbia.edu\/2012\/06\/12\/investigating-giant-unseen-landslides\/\">Earth Institute blog<\/a>).\u00a0 On 11th June they detected another, this time in the area of the border between Alaska and Canada.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeic.alaska.edu\/Seis\/recent\/macsub\/quakes\/2012163_evid10490837\/evid10490837.html\">This is the seismic event<\/a> that was almost certainly a landslide &#8211; but note that for an event like this the location is not likely to be very precise, meaning that it occurred in either Alaska or in Canada.\u00a0 The event occurred at 22:23 UT, which was 14:23 local time, on 11th June 2012.\u00a0 The map below shows the approximate location of this large event:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/06\/14\/another-very-large-landslide-this-time-on-the-canada-alaska-border-can-you-help\/12_06-alaska-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4856\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4856\" title=\"12_06 Alaska 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/06\/12_06-Alaska-1-e1339657647577.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\" \/><\/a>It would be really good to try to identify the location of this landslide.\u00a0 So, can anyone help to find it?\u00a0 This is quite a remote area, but at this time of year people will be travelling through, so if anyone has any contacts that might help us to find it then please drop me a line.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seismic instruments picked up a large landslide on the border between Canada and Alaska on 11th June.
