{"id":4695,"date":"2012-05-06T07:09:44","date_gmt":"2012-05-06T07:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=4695"},"modified":"2012-05-06T07:20:59","modified_gmt":"2012-05-06T07:20:59","slug":"flash-flood-in-nepal-kills-at-least-15-with-up-to-36-more-missing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/05\/06\/flash-flood-in-nepal-kills-at-least-15-with-up-to-36-more-missing\/","title":{"rendered":"Flash flood in Nepal kills at least 15, with up to 36 more missing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday the Seti River in Kaski District in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/28\/landslide-losses-in-nepal\/\">Nepal<\/a> was affected by a catastrophic and very sudden flash flood.\u00a0 The flood affected the villages of Kharapani in Sardikhola VDC; Sadal in Machhapuchhre VDC; Yamdi; and Ramghat in Kaski district.\u00a0 To date 15 people are confirmed to have been killed, but the toll will inevitably rise.\u00a0 Initial estimates are that there are a further 36 people missing, including three tourists.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrepublica.com\/portal\/index.php?action=news_details&amp;news_id=34672\">The image below<\/a> shows the aftermath of the flood:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4696\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4696\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/05\/06\/flash-flood-in-nepal-kills-at-least-15-with-up-to-36-more-missing\/12_05-nepal-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4696\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4696\" title=\"12_05 Nepal 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/05\/12_05-Nepal-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/05\/12_05-Nepal-1.jpg 490w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/05\/12_05-Nepal-1-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.myrepublica.com\/portal\/index.php?action=news_details&amp;news_id=34672<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The most informative reports to date are on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrepublica.com\/portal\/index.php?action=news_details&amp;news_id=34672\">Republica<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ekantipur.com\/2012\/05\/05\/top-story\/14-killed-over-50-missing-in-seti-river-flood-with-photos\/353464.html\">ekantipur<\/a> websites.<\/p>\n<p>This is an interesting event as the flood was clearly very large.\u00a0 In most cases in Nepal such extreme events occurring without rainfall are associated with either the collapse of a glacial lake dam (a so-called GLOF) or the collapse of a landslide dam.\u00a0 Pradeep Mool of ICIMOD, who has undertaken the definitive studies of GLOFs in the Himalayas, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehimalayantimes.com\/fullNews.php?headline=Sudden+flood+on+Seti+River+takes+a+heavy+toll+&amp;NewsID=330878&amp;a=3\">has noted here that<\/a> the features of this flood suggest that it was not a GLOF, and indicates that a landslide was more likely.\u00a0 Incidentally, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-17967761\">most international reports<\/a> indicate that it may have been triggered by an avalanche, but this would be really quite unusual.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/28\/landslide-losses-in-nepal\/\">This post provides background information about losses from landslides in Nepal.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Update: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-17973014\">The BBC has a video<\/a> which appears to show a late stage (i.e. not the main) flood wave at the site, and the aftermath of the flood.<\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks to Adrian Moon for his hard work on this story;
