Image dated 27 April 2023.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The slider below should allow you to compare the two images directly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"juxtapose\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2023\/05\/landslide_draper_utah_s110_20220616T211123Z_rgb_1920px_logo_wm.jpg\" alt=\"Planet SkySat image of the site of the 22 April 2023 landslide at Draper in Utah.\u00a0 \" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2023\/05\/landslide_draper_utah_s111_20230427T214428Z_rgb_1920px_logo_wm.jpg\" alt=\"Planet SkySat image of the site of the 22 April 2023 landslide at Draper in Utah. \" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Since my original post, there have been some developments at the Draper landslide.\u00a0 First, perhaps unsurprisingly, the house that was critically damaged but still standing was <a href=\"https:\/\/kutv.com\/news\/local\/draper-landslide-houses-destroyed-mudslide-salt-lake-county-utah-us-geological-survey-springtime-road-collapsed-homes-mountain-erosion-due-to-historic-snowpack-melting-spring-runoff-unstable-land#\">demolished on 26 April 2023 by the developer, Edge Homes<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/kslnewsradio.com\/2002201\/a-look-at-the-future-of-the-draper-homes-surrounding-the-collapse\/\">an initial assessment of the site indicated that the remaining houses were not at a high level of risk<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/ksltv.com\/546363\/residents-meet-with-draper-leaders-to-find-out-whats-next-for-neighborhood-after-landslide\/\">There is an interesting report about a town hall meeting with leaders of Draper city<\/a>, which suggest that planning regulations are a critical weakness:-<\/p>\n<p><em>City leaders first took about 20 minutes to discuss the\u00a0city\u2019s role in the landslide. They reiterated the fact that property rights allow people to build on their land. David Dobbins, Draper city manager, said there have been several subdivisions the city hasn\u2019t felt right about building on, but they don\u2019t have the capability to stop it without facing a lawsuit. He said that cost would be passed on to Draper taxpayers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To a European like me this is hard to understand.\u00a0 Loyal reader Funkenbeachin has put together a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q93GrT96SxM\">video of the topography of the site using Lidar and aerial imagery<\/a>, which also includes meteorological data at the end:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Draper Landslide 2023, Utah County, Utah, Aerial Imagery, Slope Map, On 1-meter DEM\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q93GrT96SxM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The Draper landslide was just one of a series of failures in the region.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/kutv.com\/news\/utah-water\/utah-geological-society-monitoring-over-100-landslides-across-beehive-state-kaysville-draper-record-snowfall-flooding-house-collapse#\">Over 100 sites are reported to be showing signs of instability<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2023).
