{"id":43459,"date":"2023-04-21T06:29:08","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T06:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=43459"},"modified":"2023-04-21T06:29:08","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T06:29:08","slug":"wenchuan-evolution-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2023\/04\/21\/wenchuan-evolution-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-seismic evolution of landslides in the Wenchuan earthquake area"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Post-seismic evolution of landslides in the Wenchuan earthquake area<\/h4>\n<p>An area of great interest in landslide research in recent years has been the ways in which landslides evolve in the aftermath of earthquakes.\u00a0 It&#8217;s well-known that earthquakes trigger many landslides in mountain areas &#8211; sometimes tens of thousands of them.\u00a0 We also know that in some circumstances the number of landslides subsequently increases, most notably in the first very heavy rainstorm after the earthquake, as weakened slopes fail under conditions of high pore water pressure.\u00a0 What happens after this is less clear, and is probably dependent on the combination of topography, geology, earthquake magnitude and climate, amongst other factors.<\/p>\n<p>The most spectacular coseismic landslide event of which I am aware was the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/05\/13\/so-what-have-we-learnt-from-the-wenchuan-sichuan-earthquake\/\">2008 Wenchuan Earthquake in China<\/a> &#8211; we will reach the 15 year anniversary of this event next month.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/10\/03\/continued-debris-flow-activity-in-the-wenchuan-sichuan-earthquake-area\/\">Landslides have been a very major issue in that area since the earthquake<\/a>, most notably in the form of debris flows.\u00a0 A new paper published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/engineering-geology\"><em>Engineering Geology<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013795223001369\">Zhang <em>et al.<\/em> 2023<\/a>) has examined the evolution of debris flows in one area of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake zone over a ten year period after the earthquake.\u00a0 Mapping was undertaken with multiple epochs of satellite data, allowing characterisation of 25 areas that has loose deposits present, and the determination of the <a class=\"topic-link\" title=\"Learn more about normalized difference vegetation index from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/normalized-difference-vegetation-index\">normalized difference vegetation index<\/a> (NDVI), which is a well-established way to assess the density of vegetation.\u00a0 The assumption was that the vegetation density is a proxy for landslide activity.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot of detail in the paper, but this diagram is worth highlighting:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43462\" style=\"width: 545px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43462\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43462\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2023\/04\/23_04-Wenchuan-1.jpg\" alt=\"Graph indicating landslide activity in the area of the Wenchuan earthquake over time.\" width=\"535\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2023\/04\/23_04-Wenchuan-1.jpg 535w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2023\/04\/23_04-Wenchuan-1-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-43462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Graph indicating landslide activity in the area of the Wenchuan earthquake over time. (2023)<\/a>.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is an imperfect diagram, with both grammatical errors and, more importantly, real problems with the scaling of the x-axis.\u00a0 But the results are really interesting.\u00a0 Loose deposits are the source of the debris flows that has affected this area since the earthquake.\u00a0 The black line indicates the number of areas of loose deposits that were mapped, and the red dots indicate the surface area of each of those areas, with the box and whiskers summarising the latter data.\u00a0 The large number of loose deposits in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake is clear.\u00a0 In the first epoch after the earthquake this number increased, but the mean area of each area reduced.\u00a0 By 2011 the number had reduced dramatically whilst the mean area increased slightly.\u00a0 Thereafter, there was a steady decline in both indicators that continued throughout the remainder of the ten years.<\/p>\n<p>The results support previous observations &#8211; the earthquake triggers many landslides, but that this subsequently gets worse due to heavy rainfall.\u00a0 The situation starts to recover thereafter &#8211; the data indicates that after three years the landslide sources have reduced significantly, perhaps in part because debris had been mobilised and removed, and in part because vegetation is recovering.\u00a0 However, the amount of landsliding remained elevated ten years after the earthquake &#8211; longer than was observed in Taiwan after the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake for example &#8211; albeit on a declining trend.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference<\/h4>\n<p>Zhang, S., Peng, J.Y.,\u00a0 Zhang, M.P. <em>et al.<\/em> 2023.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013795223001369\">Evolution of debris flow activities in the epicentral area, 10 years after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake<\/a>.\u00a0 <em>Engineering Geology<\/em>, <strong>319<\/strong>, 107118. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.enggeo.2023.107118\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.enggeo.2023.107118<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new paper in the journal Engineering Geology (Zhang et al. 2023) examines the evolution of landslides after the Wenchuan earthquake.
