{"id":42906,"date":"2023-02-16T07:49:50","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T07:49:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=42906"},"modified":"2023-02-16T07:49:50","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T07:49:50","slug":"muriwai-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2023\/02\/16\/muriwai-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Muriwai: the complex story of a fatal landslide in New Zealand"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Muriwai: the complex story of a fatal landslide in New Zealand<\/h4>\n<p>In New Zealand, the clean up after the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2023\/02\/10\/geonet-1-2\/\">heavy rainfall of recent weeks<\/a>, and in particular the impacts of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2023\/02\/14\/cyclone-gabrielle-1\/\">Cyclone Gabrielle<\/a>, continues. The number of landslides is very high &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/cyclone-gabrielle-auckland-hit-by-estimated-1000-damaging-landslides-in-storms-wake\/T67C6SADOVASTGGFA5KUDZD7QA\/\">Auckland Council estimates that there have been 3,000 to 5,000 landslides in that region alone, with about 1,000 causing damage to properties and infrastructure<\/a>.\u00a0 The ground remains saturated, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/weather-news\/300808339\/cyclone-gabrielle-live-updates-flooding-devastation-and-fears-for-those-unaccounted-for\">some rain has continued to fall<\/a>, so the risk of slope failures continues.<\/p>\n<p>Landslides killed at least two people.\u00a0 In one event, at Muriwai, a slope failure killed a volunteer member of the fire and rescue service, Dave van Zwanenberg, and left another critically injured.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/cyclone-gabrielle-auckland-hit-by-estimated-1000-damaging-landslides-in-storms-wake\/T67C6SADOVASTGGFA5KUDZD7QA\/\">The NZ Herald has an excellent article about this landslide<\/a>, and others in the Auckland area.\u00a0 It quotes an old friend of mine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canterbury.ac.nz\/science\/contact-us\/people\/tim-davies.html\">Tim Davies of the University of Canterbury<\/a>, who has noted that the recent events will probably have changed the landslide risk profile of Auckland permanently:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c&#8230;the slips this week might have destabilised adjacent areas and made them more likely to fail in future storms.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I think this is likely to be correct.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/auckland\/local-news\/9041058\/Old-memories-revisited\">the Muriwai landslide event is also explored in an article on Stuff<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.auckland.ac.nz\/m-brook\">Martin Brook of the School of Environment, University of Auckland<\/a> has noted that the track of the landslide partially coincides with another landslide that occurred in 1965, killing two people.\u00a0 Back in 2013, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/auckland\/local-news\/9041058\/Old-memories-revisited\">the same outlet ran a story about this earlier landslide.<\/a>\u00a0 Rather presciently, the 2013 article quotes Kay Allen, a resident of Muriwai at the time of the 1965 landslide, on seeing a small slip in the same area:<\/p>\n<p class=\"sics-component__html-injector sics-component__story__paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The Mt Somers resident was horrified to see yet another landslide above Domain Cres in Muriwai.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"sics-component__html-injector sics-component__story__paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to see history repeating itself,&#8221; Ms Allen says &#8230; &#8220;We walked down to the slip to have a look &#8211; it&#8217;s nowhere near as big but it&#8217;s in the same place and the ground looks unstable.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"sics-component__html-injector sics-component__story__paragraph\"><em>The Waitemata County Council declared back then that the sections in the path of the slip would never be built on.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"sics-component__html-injector sics-component__story__paragraph\"><em>&#8220;There are now houses on all those sections,&#8221;
