{"id":42893,"date":"2023-02-14T07:22:21","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T07:22:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=42893"},"modified":"2023-02-14T07:22:21","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T07:22:21","slug":"cyclone-gabrielle-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2023\/02\/14\/cyclone-gabrielle-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Landslides in North Island of New Zealand from Cyclone Gabrielle"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Landslides in North Island of New Zealand from Cyclone Gabrielle<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As forecast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-64630183\">Cyclone Gabrielle<\/a> has struck <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=new+zealand&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">New Zealand<\/a>, bringing very high rainfall totals to North Island.\u00a0 This comes on top of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2023\/01\/30\/auckland-1\/\">recent heavy rainfall events in the area<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2023\/02\/10\/geonet-1-2\/\">which have already triggered many landslides<\/a>.\u00a0 The Prime Minister has declared a <a href=\"https:\/\/home.nzcity.co.nz\/news\/article.aspx?id=371175&amp;fm=newsmain%2Cnarts\">National State of Emergency for only the third time<\/a>, but the true picture remains a little unclear as areas are cut off with limited communications.<\/p>\n<p>The northern part of New Zealand is having an extraordinary start to the year &#8211; remember, this is summer there.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MetService\/status\/1625293511179513858\">Met Service tweeted this graph of cumulative rainfall for Auckland Airport<\/a>, including data for the years since 2019 and the long term average:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">To help put 2023 in context for Aucklanders, here is the Airport rain accumulation plot (red line is 2023, showing a total of 540mm). <\/p>\n<p>The Airport has seen about half (48%) of its annual rainfall in just 45 days.
