{"id":42882,"date":"2023-02-13T06:33:12","date_gmt":"2023-02-13T06:33:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=42882"},"modified":"2023-02-13T06:33:12","modified_gmt":"2023-02-13T06:33:12","slug":"turkey-syria-earthquakes-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2023\/02\/13\/turkey-syria-earthquakes-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Emerging information about landslides from the 6 February 2023 Turkey\u2013Syria earthquakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Emerging information about landslide from the 6 February 2023 Turkey\u2013Syria earthquakes<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The loss of life from the dreadful <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2023\/02\/07\/turkey-syria-earthquakes\/\">6 February 2023 Turkey\u2013Syria earthquakes<\/a> has now reached a horrifying 33,000 people, with further increases possible.\u00a0 Media interest is starting to wane as the rescue operation winds down.\u00a0 It is worth noting that whilst a small number of remarkable rescues continue to occur, providing for the millions displaced and the thousands who have been injured is likely to be the biggest challenge, and needs to be the focus of attention.\u00a0 This will last for years, long after the cameras have disappeared.\u00a0 The plight of those left in refugee camps is often very poor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hart-uk.org\/blog\/dangers-girl-refugee-camp\/\">especially for women and girls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In tis context, writing about landslides feels trivial, but of course in their own right they cause major challenges.\u00a0 Amongst the many tweets about the fault are some that show landslides and other types of ground failure.\u00a0 For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sabah\/status\/1624723740113137664\">@Sabah has tweeted a remarkable video of the aftermath of a catastrophic lateral spread in a road embankment<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"tr\" dir=\"ltr\">YOL YERLE B\u0130R OLDU<\/p>\n<p>Ad\u0131yaman-\u015eanl\u0131urfa-Gaziantep Otoyolu&#39;nun \u00fczerinden ge\u00e7en K\u00f6\u015feli k\u00f6y\u00fcn\u00fcn yolunun yerle bir olmas\u0131 ve olu\u015fan devasa \u00e7atlaklar depremin b\u00fcy\u00fckl\u00fc\u011f\u00fcn\u00fc bir kez daha g\u00f6sterdi. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BLu2ADfTLE\">pic.twitter.com\/BLu2ADfTLE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sabah (@sabah) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sabah\/status\/1624723740113137664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The translation states that:-<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The collapse of the road to the village of Koseli, which passes over the Ad\u0131yaman-Sanliurfa-Gaziantep Highway, and the huge cracks that formed once again showed the magnitude of the earthquake.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is a still from the video:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42885\" style=\"width: 679px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42885\" class=\" wp-image-42885\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2023\/02\/23_02-Gazientep-1.jpg\" alt=\"An extraordinary lateral spread in an embankment, triggered by the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes.\" width=\"669\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2023\/02\/23_02-Gazientep-1.jpg 670w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2023\/02\/23_02-Gazientep-1-300x270.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>An extraordinary lateral spread in an embankment, triggered by the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sabah\/status\/1624723740113137664\">Image from a video posted to Twitter by @Sabah.<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This would make an interesting case study for further analysis.\u00a0 I find it interesting that the highest part of the embankment, in the distance in the image, did not fail, and that there are signs of deformation in the ground beyond the ditch on the left side of the image.\u00a0 I am not an expert in lateral spreads, but I wonder if this involved failure in the ground below the embankment?\u00a0 The failure is quite reminiscent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/12\/01\/alaska-earthquake-1\/\">event triggered by the 30 November 2018 Alaska earthquake<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, another very large failure has attracted considerable attention. On social media there has been some confusion between a landslide and the fault scarp over this event, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JudithGeology\/status\/1624524445325950978\">Dr Judith Hubbard at Cornell has provided clarity<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This rift is not a fault, but was still caused by Monday&#39;s earthquakes.
