{"id":42412,"date":"2022-12-16T07:39:34","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T07:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=42412"},"modified":"2022-12-16T07:40:17","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T07:40:17","slug":"genting-highlands-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/12\/16\/genting-highlands-1\/","title":{"rendered":"A major, deadly landslide in Genting Highlands, Malaysia"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>A major, deadly landslide in Genting Highlands, Malaysia<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On this, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/12\/16\/fifteen-years-of-the-landslide-blog\/\">the 15th anniversary of the Landslide Blog<\/a>, there is tragic news of a major landslide in the Genting Highlands of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=malaysia&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">Malaysia<\/a>.\u00a0 The situation remains dynamic as I write, but it is clear that the landslide inundated a campsite at a location known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/fathersorganicfarm\/\">Father&#8217;s Organic Farm<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nst.com.my\/news\/nation\/2022\/12\/861393\/batang-kali-landslide-51-adults-30-kids-registered-campsite-last-night\">News reports indicate that there were 81 people registered to stay at the site, 30 of whom were children<\/a>, plus of course a number of staff.\u00a0 In total 53 people have been reported to have been rescued. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaymail.com\/news\/malaysia\/2022\/12\/16\/batang-kali-landslide-fatalities-up-to-16-as-at-1pm-17-still-missing\/45589\">As I write, there are 16 confirmed fatalities, with a further 17 believed to be missing<\/a>.\u00a0 These numbers will change in the coming hours.<\/p>\n<p>There are some videos on Twitter collected via drones showing the configuration of the landslide.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BernamaTV\/status\/1603587971374280704\">These videos in particular are revealing<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/BernamaTV\/status\/1603587971374280704<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Based on these videos I believe that the site of the landslide is at 3.423, 101.757.\u00a0 This is my interpretation of the location on Google Earth:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42415\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42415\" class=\" wp-image-42415\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/12\/22_12-Genting-Highlands-1.jpg\" alt=\"Google Earth image of my interpretation of the site of the 16 December 2022 landslide at Genting Highlands in Malaysia.\" width=\"799\" height=\"624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/12\/22_12-Genting-Highlands-1.jpg 1245w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/12\/22_12-Genting-Highlands-1-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/12\/22_12-Genting-Highlands-1-1024x799.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/12\/22_12-Genting-Highlands-1-768x600.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42415\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of my interpretation of the site of the 16 December 2022 landslide at Genting Highlands in Malaysia.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide occurred at 2:42 am, which sadly will have amplified the human cost of the disaster &#8211;
