{"id":4236,"date":"2012-02-07T07:52:09","date_gmt":"2012-02-07T07:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=4236"},"modified":"2012-02-07T07:52:33","modified_gmt":"2012-02-07T07:52:33","slug":"an-update-on-the-landslides-from-the-philippine-earthquake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/02\/07\/an-update-on-the-landslides-from-the-philippine-earthquake\/","title":{"rendered":"An update on the landslides from the Philippines Earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/02\/06\/first-news-of-landslides-from-the-earthquake-in-the-philippines-this-morning\/\">earthquake in the Philippines yesterday<\/a> appears to have stirred barely a ripple in the global media, but in a comparatively small area of Negros Oriental conditions are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunstar.com.ph\/cebu\/local-news\/2012\/02\/07\/close-900-aftershocks-recorded-negros-cebu-204731\">clearly very difficult<\/a>.\u00a0 It is now clear that the majority of deaths have resulted from landslides.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndrrmc.gov.ph\/attachments\/article\/439\/NDRRMC%20Update%20Sitrep%204%20on%20Negros%20Earthquake.pdf\">latest NRRDMC report<\/a> lists one confirmed fatality from a landslide in Tayasan, plus 29 people missing at Barangay (village) Planas in Guihulngan, and 42 missing at Barangay Solonggon in La Libertad, giving a landslide toll to date of 72 people.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunstar.com.ph\/cebu\/local-news\/2012\/02\/07\/close-900-aftershocks-recorded-negros-cebu-204731\">Meanwhile the media is also reporting<\/a> that the landslide at Planas appears to have blocked the river:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A new crisis unraveled when the landslide in Planas clogged a mountain  river, threatening about four villages downstream. If the river swells  or the landslide gives way, the accumulated water may sweep away houses  along the banks, Reyes said.
