{"id":42329,"date":"2022-12-13T07:53:22","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T07:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=42329"},"modified":"2022-12-13T07:53:22","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T07:53:22","slug":"gaguney-landslide-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/12\/13\/gaguney-landslide-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gaguney landslide in India: evolution over time"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>The Gaguney landslide in India: evolution over time<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/12\/12\/save-the-hills-pathing-1\/\">I wrote about the work<\/a> that <a href=\"http:\/\/savethehills.blogspot.com\/\">Save The Hills<\/a> has been doing to highlight the plight of people of Pathing in northern India who are being affected by the Gaguney landslide.\u00a0 This landslide had been problematic for some time, but in November of this year the situation became dramatically worse, with a new area of instability threatening many more houses.<\/p>\n<p>A combination of Google Earth and Planet Labs imagery provides an interesting perspective on the development of this failure.\u00a0 There is a good Google Earth image from 2011 &#8211; Image copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>, used with permission.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The main slide had further increased in size, whilst the secondary failure had also developed considerably, and there was evidence of debris impacting much more of the village.\u00a0 Note the substantial part of the access track that was now covered by landslide debris.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most worrying sign is the large volume of displaced mass that is now in the headscarp area, directly above the smaller landslide that threatens the main part of the village.\u00a0 This material needs to be examined in more detail &#8211; the PlanetScope imagery has a resolution that is too low for proper analysis.\u00a0 The threat to the village needs to be properly assessed.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2022).
