{"id":42269,"date":"2022-11-29T07:36:46","date_gmt":"2022-11-29T07:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=42269"},"modified":"2022-11-29T07:36:46","modified_gmt":"2022-11-29T07:36:46","slug":"west-java-earthquake-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/11\/29\/west-java-earthquake-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Cianjur: a deadly landslide from the 21 November 2022 West Java earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Cianjur: a deadly landslide from the 21 November 2022 West Java earthquake<\/h4>\n<p>On 21 November 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2022_West_Java_earthquake\">a Mw=5.6 earthquake struck West Java<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=indonesia&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">Indonesia<\/a>.\u00a0 The magnitude of the earthquake was comparatively low, but the event was exceptionally shallow (\u224811 km), generating very high peak ground accelerations, albeit over a small but populated area.\u00a0 At the time of writing it is estimated that at least 323 people were killed and over 62,000 homes were damaged.<\/p>\n<p>In this environment. damaging earthquakes would be expected to trigger landslides.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2022_West_Java_earthquake\">Wikipiedia reports damage to roads and power infrastructure<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Landslides cut off roads.<sup id=\"cite_ref-28\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2022_West_Java_earthquake#cite_note-28\">[28]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0A landslide along Puncak-Cipanas-Cianjur national road forced a traffic diversion. Toppled trees, uprooted power poles and downed power cables also occurred along roads.<sup id=\"cite_ref-29\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2022_West_Java_earthquake#cite_note-29\">[29]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0<a title=\"Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ministry_of_Energy_and_Mineral_Resources\">Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources<\/a>\u00a0said two landslides occurred in Cugenang District. One measured 44\u00a0m (144\u00a0ft) and 16\u00a0m (52\u00a0ft) high while the latter measured 162\u00a0m (531\u00a0ft) and 45\u00a0m (148\u00a0ft) high.<sup id=\"cite_ref-30\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2022_West_Java_earthquake#cite_note-30\">[30]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0A village in Cugenang with eight homes was completely buried under a landslide.<sup id=\"cite_ref-31\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2022_West_Java_earthquake#cite_note-31\">[31]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The most spectacular landslide that I have seen occurred close to Cugenang, as noted above.\u00a0 There are images of this landslide in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gmanews\/status\/1595347805232836609\">Tweet by GMA News<\/a>, featuring images by Antara Foto\/Raisan Al Farisi via Reuters:-<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/gmanews\/status\/1595347805232836609<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The second image is very revealing:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42272\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42272\" class=\" wp-image-42272\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/11\/22_11-West-Java-1a.jpg\" alt=\"Landslides close to Cugenang, triggered by the 2022 West Java earthquake. \" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/11\/22_11-West-Java-1a.jpg 1304w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/11\/22_11-West-Java-1a-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/11\/22_11-West-Java-1a-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/11\/22_11-West-Java-1a-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Landslides close to Cugenang, triggered by the 2022 West Java earthquake. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gmanews\/status\/1595347805232836609\">Image tweeted by GMA News, by Antara Foto\/Raisan Al Farisi via Reuters.<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The location of the main landslide is -6.795, 107.079.\u00a0 The image shows two other landslides, one just above the road on the far side of the main failure (also visible in the first image tweeted by GMA News), and the other on a bend in the river.\u00a0 The material forming the landslides is deeply weathered and the failure at the head scarp is quite deep.\u00a0 It is interesting that the crown of the landslide coincides with some buildings and a terrace.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear at present as to the number of other landslides that have been triggered by this earthquake, and clouds make satellite imagery hard to collect.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/seatodaynews\/status\/1596706716984705025\">Some reports indicate that 18 bodies were recovered from a landslide<\/a>, but I am unsure as to the particular failure to which this refers.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several landslides were triggered by the 21 November 2022 West Java earthquake in Indonesia.
