{"id":4226,"date":"2012-02-06T17:58:37","date_gmt":"2012-02-06T17:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=4226"},"modified":"2012-02-06T17:59:45","modified_gmt":"2012-02-06T17:59:45","slug":"first-news-of-landslides-from-the-earthquake-in-the-philippines-this-morning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/02\/06\/first-news-of-landslides-from-the-earthquake-in-the-philippines-this-morning\/","title":{"rendered":"First news of landslides from the earthquake in the Philippines this morning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Negros Oriental area of the Philippines suffered a <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eqinthenews\/2012\/usb0007wgq\/\">M=6.7 earthquake<\/a> this morning at 11:49 am local time.\u00a0 Although moderately deep (20 km ), this event appears to have caused some damage, with <a href=\"http:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/140881\/quake-kills-52-in-negros-oriental\">news reports suggesting that at least 52 people have been killed<\/a>. \u00a0 The timing of the earthquake just a few hours before sunset probably means that the full picture won&#8217;t be available until the morning, but it is possible that the losses will rise. Interestingly, losses are more than the<a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/pager\/events\/us\/b0007wgq\/index.html\"> PAGER data<\/a> would indicate.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, at the moment it appears that a substantial number of these losses may be associated with landslides.\u00a0 For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/140881\/quake-kills-52-in-negros-oriental\">inquirer.net is reporting at several landslides<\/a>.\u00a0 These seem to include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>29 people killed in a landslide in a landslide in Barangay Planas in Guihulngan City;<\/li>\n<li>10 people killed in a landslide on Ten others died due to a landslide on the Guihulngan national road<\/li>\n<li>An unknown number of people trapped in the village of  Solongon in La Libertad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A quick look at the Google Earth image of the affected area hints at why the landslide losses may be high:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4227\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/02\/06\/first-news-of-landslides-from-the-earthquake-in-the-philippines-this-morning\/12_02-philippines-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4227\" title=\"12_02 Philippines 1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2012\/02\/12_02-Philippines-1-e1328550716912.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The coastal strip affected the earthquake (note the epicentre location in the sea on the left side) is both steep and inhabited.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndrrmc.gov.ph\/\">The NDRRMC is posting updates here<\/a>.\u00a0 This is likely to be the best source of information on losses by this time tomorrow.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Initial news of landslides triggered by the earhquake in the Philippines this morning.
