{"id":42072,"date":"2022-11-08T07:40:14","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T07:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=42072"},"modified":"2022-11-09T07:36:28","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T07:36:28","slug":"williamson-mine-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/11\/08\/williamson-mine-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Another tailings dam failure: the Williamson Mine in Tanzania"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Another tailings dam failure: the Williamson Mine in Tanzania<\/h4>\n<p>I&#8217;m sad to report this morning that there has been yet another significant tailings dam failure, this time at the Williamson Mine in Tanzania (the location is <span class=\"latitude p-latitude\" title=\"Latitude\">-3.525<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"longitude p-longitude\" title=\"Longitude\">33.620).\u00a0 There are brief reports in a number of mining related journals, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miningreview.com\/diamonds-gems\/tailings-storage-facility-wall-breach-at-williamson-in-tanzania\/\">African Mining Review<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miningweekly.com\/article\/petra-says-eastern-wall-of-williamson-tailings-dam-breaches-teams-on-site-2022-11-07\">Mining Weekly<\/a>\u00a0 The reports indicate that the eastern wall of the tailings storage facility has been breached.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"longitude p-longitude\" title=\"Longitude\">This is a Google Earth image of the site, which is a diamond mine owned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petradiamonds.com\/\">Petra Diamonds<\/a> (75%) and by the Government of Tanzania (25%):-<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42075\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42075\" class=\" wp-image-42075\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/11\/22_11-Tanzania-2.jpg\" alt=\"Google Earth image of the Williamson Mine in Tanzania.
