{"id":41971,"date":"2022-10-28T06:32:39","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T06:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=41971"},"modified":"2022-10-28T06:35:01","modified_gmt":"2022-10-28T06:35:01","slug":"duffey-lake-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/10\/28\/duffey-lake-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The Duffey Lake landslide: old logging roads and slope failures"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The Duffey Lake landslide: old logging roads and slope failures<\/h4>\n<p>On 15 November 2021 a series of landslides occurred during a period of heavy rainfall in British Columbia, Canada.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/11\/16\/bc-1\/\">I wrote about those landslides at the time<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/11\/22\/british-columbia-landslides-2\/\">Substantial damage was caused to both Highway 1 and Highway 99<\/a>. Still from a video produced by CBC.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The landslides at Duffey Lake appear to have originated from the sites of an old logging road high up on the hillsides.\u00a0 This road was constructed in the 1960s, and used through to the mid-1990s but then abandoned. Two older, small landslides had left debris resting on the road below the switchback, plugging a ditch.
