{"id":41876,"date":"2022-10-12T08:28:07","date_gmt":"2022-10-12T08:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=41876"},"modified":"2022-10-12T08:28:07","modified_gmt":"2022-10-12T08:28:07","slug":"las-tejerias-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/10\/12\/las-tejerias-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Las Tejer\u00edas: Planet Labs imagery starts to clarify the sequence of events"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Las Tejer\u00edas: Planet Labs imagery starts to clarify the sequence of events<\/h4>\n<p>The cost of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/10\/10\/las-tejerias-1\/\">Las Tejer\u00edas landslides<\/a> in Venezuela is slowly becoming clear.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/internacional\/2022-10-12\/un-deslave-causa-decenas-de-muertos-en-las-tejerias-venezuela.html\">El Pais indicated today that to date 39 bodies have been recovered from the town<\/a>, with a further 56 people missing.\u00a0 The prospects of any further survivors are now close to zero, such that the final toll will be almost 100 people.\u00a0 Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, the President of Venezuela, has now visited the town and pledged to rebuild it, although history from similar sites around the world shows that such promises are frequently not delivered.\u00a0 Meanwhile there are complaints that the media has been limited in its ability to report on the disaster.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gIhb0H134xk\">this news report there is some footage of the site<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/10\/10\/las-tejerias-1\/#comment-252317\">thanks to loyal reader Ryukai for highlighting this in a comment<\/a>):-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tragedia en Las Tejer\u00edas. Image copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>, used with permission.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This image clearly shows that the main flow came down the channel of the Rio Las Tejer\u00edas, which flows through the town from the north, as I speculated on Monday.\u00a0 This has flows into the town, causing extensive damage to the properties close to its banks.\u00a0 The inundation in the main part of the town can be seen.\u00a0 In fact, most of Las Tejer\u00edas is constructed on a delta formed by this channel, so the hazard was clear.<\/p>\n<p>In the visible sections of the Rio Las Tejer\u00edas the effects of the mudflow can be seen.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the upper reaches of this channel remain covered in cloud, so it is not possible to determine what caused the flow.\u00a0 Hopefully the cloud will clear in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference and acknowledgement<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2022).
