Note the buttressed walls of dam on the southereastern side.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>It is very clear that the wall of the tailings dam on the southeast corner was greatly thickened over the two year period.\u00a0 This was not matched on the east side, for example.\u00a0 This appears on first inspection to have been what might be described as buttressing on the downstream side.\u00a0 No explanation has been provided as yet as to why this occurred, but it is interesting to note that the failure occurred on the southeast wall of the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate that there are 400 more tailings facilities in South Africa.\u00a0 In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/africa\/1786297\/south-africa-has-most-environmentally-dangerous-tailing-dams\/\">52 of these were classified as being &#8220;active high risk tailings dams<\/a> &#8220;.\u00a0 I hope that attention will now be paid to ensuring that these are safe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yr.no\/en\/forecast\/daily-table\/2-994257\/Republic%20of%20South%20Africa\/Free%20State\/Xhariep%20District%20Municipality\/Jagersfontein\">The weather forecast for Jagersfontien indicates that rain is anticipated on 19 September<\/a>.\u00a0 Urgent attention is needed to ensure that further mobility of the tailings both in the facility and in the surrounding area is prevented.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference and acknowledgement<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2022).
