{"id":40670,"date":"2022-04-14T10:12:48","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T10:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=40670"},"modified":"2022-04-14T10:12:48","modified_gmt":"2022-04-14T10:12:48","slug":"three-very-large-landslides-triggered-by-tropical-storm-megi-agaton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/04\/14\/three-very-large-landslides-triggered-by-tropical-storm-megi-agaton\/","title":{"rendered":"Three very large landslides triggered by Tropical Storm Megi \/ Agaton"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Three very large landslides triggered by Tropical Storm Megi \/ Agaton<\/h4>\n<p>Over the last two days more information has started to emerge about the landslides triggered by Tropical Storm Megi \/ Agaton, which caused mayhem on the island of Leyte in the Philippines on 11 April 2022.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/world-news\/philippines-landslide-death-toll-hits-123-amid-frantic-searches-for-survivors-41552624.html\">The latest news on casualties is that at least 123 people were killed<\/a>, the majority in landslides, but more remain missing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/04\/12\/agaton-1\/\">Earlier this week I highlighted a major landslide at the village of Kantagnos in Baybay<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/1582944\/fwd-agaton-leaves-76-deaths-29-missing\">The Inquirer has now published an image that provides a detailed view of this site<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40673\" style=\"width: 816px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40673\" class=\" wp-image-40673\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/04\/21_04-BayBay-4.jpeg\" alt=\"The aftermath of the landslide at Kantagnos village in Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines, triggered by Tropical Storm Megi. \" width=\"806\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/04\/21_04-BayBay-4.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/04\/21_04-BayBay-4-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/04\/21_04-BayBay-4-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 806px) 100vw, 806px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-40673\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The aftermath of the landslide at Kantagnos village in Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines, triggered by Tropical Storm Megi. <a href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/1582944\/fwd-agaton-leaves-76-deaths-29-missing\">Image from Inquirer.net.<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a very large failure in deeply weathered materials.\u00a0 The source appears to be a shallow slide on a steep, forested hillslope, but note that there are at least two other sources, albeit substantially smaller.\u00a0 The landslide has spread considerably to affect a very large swathe of land.\u00a0 The small number of standing trees might suggest that it was a comparatively shallow flow, but to a human or a weak structure it would have been devastating.\u00a0 Note the houses on the margin of the landslide on the right side of the image.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pna.gov.ph\/articles\/1172223\">The Philippines News Agency reports that at least 26 people are known to have died in this devastating landslide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A second major event occurred in the village of Pilar in Abuyog.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pna.gov.ph\/articles\/1172223\">Here at least 29 people are known to have died<\/a>, but as many as 177 more are reported to be missing.\u00a0 This total is likely to reduce, but it is clear that the landslide here has been devastating.<\/p>\n<p>I can find few images of this landslide online, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aN4PRaSR6IE\">Youtube has a drone video of the site<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Drone Footage Brgy  Pilar Landslide\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aN4PRaSR6IE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The power of even this smaller landslide is appalling.<\/p>\n<p>A third example occurred at the village of Bunga, also in Baybay.\u00a0 This landslide was also fatal &#8211;
