{"id":40582,"date":"2022-04-06T06:55:25","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T06:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=40582"},"modified":"2022-04-06T06:55:25","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T06:55:25","slug":"wenquan-township-tailings-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/04\/06\/wenquan-township-tailings-1\/","title":{"rendered":"A tailings dam failure in Wenquan Township Jiaokou County, Shanxi Province, China"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>A tailings dam failure in Wenquan Township, Shanxi Province, China<\/h4>\n<p>Yesterday my friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/worldminetailingsfailures.org\/\">World Mine Tailings Failures<\/a> alerted me to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tellerreport.com\/life\/2022-04-01-shanxi-jiaokou-official-responds-to-%22a-dam-failure-accident-in-a-tailings-pond%22.S1XU60yrXq.html\">report from China<\/a> of a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=tailings&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">tailings facility failure<\/a> in Wenquan Township<em>, <\/em>Jiaokou County, Shanxi Province, China.\u00a0 The report provides limited detail, the salient points of which are as follows:-<\/p>\n<p><em>On the afternoon of March 27, a landslide occurred in a material yard of Shanxi Daoer Aluminum Co., Ltd.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>According to reports, at around 17:00 on March 27, a tailings pond of Daoer Company, located in Wenquan Township, Jiaokou County, broke a dam. Part of the factory area was buried; a large pit was formed in the tailings pond, the dam body was flushed with a gap of about 70 to 80 meters, and the mud accumulation blocked the local road.<\/em><em>..<\/em><em>According to the report of the People&#8217;s Government of Jiaokou County, after preliminary inspection, a landslide occurred in a material storage yard of Daoer Company in the county, causing 7.5 mu of arbor forest land to be buried, more than 200 meters of seasonal ditches and rural roads were blocked, and part of the surrounding walls of adjacent enterprises were washed away. Image courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet<\/a>, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The location of the tailings dam failure is \u00a037.1059, 111.4301.\u00a0 The mobilised tailings appear to have moved about 700 m from the crest of the scar to the toe of the waste, or about 500 m from the edge of the failed retaining structure to the toe of the dam.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>I have created a Juxtapose slider to compare a Planet image from before the failure (collected on 7 March 2022) with the one after (collected on 28 March 20222 &#8211; the day after the collapse):-<\/p>\n<div class=\"juxtapose\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/04\/21_04-China-1.jpg\" alt=\"Satellite image of the site of the 27 March 2022 tailings dam failure at Wenquan Township in Shanxi Province China.\" width=\"900\" height=\"515\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/04\/21_04-China-2.jpg\" alt=\"Satellite image of the 27 March 2022 tailings dam failure at Wenquan Township in Shanxi Province China.\" width=\"800\" height=\"515\" \/><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>There are inevitable resolution limitations in this genuinely amazing daily Planet imagery, but it confirms aspects of the report in the news report.\u00a0 In the runout zone the tailings have clearly partially inundated an industrial facility &#8211; presumably the concentrator &#8211; and a road is blocked.\u00a0 The remainder of the tailings are mostly covering vegetated slopes.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent (5 April 2022) imagery suggests that the road has been cleared and the tailings have been covered in a grey material.\u00a0 I am unsure as to what this might be.<\/p>\n<p>The Wenquan Township event is not a large tailings failure, and the runout is comparatively modest.\u00a0 Nonetheless, it is of concern given the number of such facilities in China.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Acknowledgement<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2022).
