{"id":40548,"date":"2022-04-04T06:44:59","date_gmt":"2022-04-04T06:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=40548"},"modified":"2022-04-04T06:44:59","modified_gmt":"2022-04-04T06:44:59","slug":"praia-de-itaguacu-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/04\/04\/praia-de-itaguacu-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Praia de Itagua\u00e7u: one of a series of destructive landslides in Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Praia de Itagua\u00e7u: one of a series of destructive landslides in Brazil<\/h4>\n<p>On Saturday 2 April 2022 a series of landslides were triggered by heavy rainfall in the state of Rio de Janeiro in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=brazil&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">Brazil<\/a>.\u00a0 In total 16 people are known to have died, the majority of whom lost their lives in landslides. The picture is a little confused at the moment, but reports include a mudslide in the town of Paraty, which killed two children and injured four people; another landslide in Paraty that killed a mother and seven of her children; and a landslide in the Monsuaba neighborhood of Angra dos Reis, which killed eight people, including four children.\u00a0 Three more people are missing in Monsuba.\u00a0 You will see that the total fatalities in the events described above is greater than the reported death toll, so I await greater clarity.<\/p>\n<p>One major landslide occurred at Praia de Itagua\u00e7u, a popular beach on Ilha Grande in Angra do Reis (note that there are several beaches with this name in Brazil).\u00a0 There are reports that four people may have been killed.\u00a0 There is a video taken from a boat showing the aftermath of this large landslide that has been widely tweeted, such as below:-<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"pt\" dir=\"ltr\">Impressionante | Um deslizamento de terra atingiu a Praia de Itagua\u00e7u em Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis. Image from a video that has been widely tweeted.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Once again we await better imagery, which is likely to become available today, although further rain is forecast in this area.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/earth-sciences\/people\/faculty\/Sepulveda.html\">Sergio Sepulveda<\/a> (now of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/earth-sciences.html\">Simon Fraser University<\/a>) and I analysed data on landslides in Central and South America (<a href=\"https:\/\/nhess.copernicus.org\/articles\/15\/1821\/2015\/\">Sepulveda and Petley 2015 &#8211; available open access<\/a>).
