Image from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmetro.com.my\/mutakhir\/2022\/03\/819651\/kejadian-tanah-runtuh-di-malaysia-sejak-2021\">My Metro<\/a>.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall, which is quite unusual for this time of year in Malaysia.\u00a0 It appears that the immediate trigger was an extremely heavy, short duration rainfall event, although unseasonal rainfall has reportedly been falling for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>There is a video of the landslide occurring, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eugenechung\/status\/1501915987800911875\">which has been posted to Twitter<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Landslide in Ampang, 15 houses affected, three feared buried alive<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/g1NlaKtqnN\">https:\/\/t.co\/g1NlaKtqnN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>10 March 2022<\/p>\n<p>AMPANG JAYA: Some residents at Taman Bukit Permai were injured after a landslide covered several homes in Pandan Indah here today. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ABg68cpksh\">pic.twitter.com\/ABg68cpksh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Eugene CHUNG (@eugenechung) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eugenechung\/status\/1501915987800911875?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 10, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The video appears to show a rotational failure in the upper part of the slope.\u00a0 The main track is essentially planar &#8211; it appears that the main part of the debris has moved as a flow, fortunately with only moderate mobility.\u00a0 The failure appears to have been in deeply weathered (residual) soil or in fill (see below).\u00a0 Interestingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nst.com.my\/news\/nation\/2022\/03\/779407\/ampang-landslide-were-warning-signs-ignored-nsttv\">there are some reports that local residents had seen signs of deformation on the slope in the weeks leading up to the failure<\/a>.\u00a0 It is also interesting to note that in the first image posted above another large landslide is visible on the slope.<\/p>\n<p>The location of the landslide is 3.107, 101.762.\u00a0 At first glance the slope looks to be natural, but Google Earth is very revealing.\u00a0 The image below was collected in 2004:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40396\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40396\" class=\" wp-image-40396\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/03\/22_03-Ampang-3.jpg\" alt=\"Google Earth image of the location of the Ampang landslide in Malaysia.\" width=\"800\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/03\/22_03-Ampang-3.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/03\/22_03-Ampang-3-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/03\/22_03-Ampang-3-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2022\/03\/22_03-Ampang-3-768x549.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-40396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Google Earth image of the location of the Ampang landslide in Malaysia.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The image above appears to indicate that this was an engineered (i.e. modified) slope.\u00a0 It will be interesting to discover the design specification for this slope, the maintenance regime (especially with regard to drainage) and the monitoring that has been undertaken since.\u00a0 Hong Kong&#8217;s remarkably successful slope safety system has been based upon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bd.gov.hk\/en\/safety-inspection\/slope-safety\/index.html\">careful management of engineered slopes such as this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 10 March 2022 a rainfall-triggered urban landslide killed four people, and injured another individual in Malaysia.
