{"id":40222,"date":"2022-02-16T07:41:13","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T07:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=40222"},"modified":"2022-02-16T07:42:49","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T07:42:49","slug":"petropolis-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2022\/02\/16\/petropolis-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Petr\u00f3polis: heavy rainfall causes landslides and floods"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Petr\u00f3polis: heavy rainfall causes landslides and floods<\/h4>\n<p>Extremely heavy rainfall in the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petr%C3%B3polis\">Petr\u00f3polis<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=brazil&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">Brazil<\/a> triggered landslides and floods yesterday.\u00a0 At the time of writing, the death toll had risen to 23 people, but this may change in the coming hours.<\/p>\n<p>There are at least 49 reported landslides across the region.\u00a0 At least one significant, fatal landslide occurred in <a href=\"http:\/\/wikimapia.org\/11543622\/pt\/Morro-da-Oficina\">Morro de Oficina<\/a>, with at least six fatalities reported.<\/p>\n<p>There are some dramatic videos of the events.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SMN3DTxGhgc\">This one shows a very rapid debris flow cutting through the city<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"V\u00eddeos de moradores mostram ruas de Petr\u00f3polis tomadas por lama\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SMN3DTxGhgc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>W<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1u2uZl8MtIY\">hilst the one below shows an extraordinarily destructive landslide destroying houses<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chuva em Petr\u00f3polis: temporal causa destrui\u00e7\u00e3o, desabamentos e alagamentos\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1u2uZl8MtIY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/g1.globo.com\/rj\/regiao-serrana\/noticia\/2022\/02\/15\/grande-voluma-de-chuva-causa-inundacoes-arrasta-carros-e-provoca-queda-de-barreiras-em-petropolis.ghtml\">Globo news reports indicate that Petr\u00f3polis received extraordinary levels of rainfall<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The highest hourly record is 125.8 mm\/h at 5:15 pm in the Alto da Serra (INEA) rain gauge.
