Flow from the mining landslide at Pau Branco<\/h4>\n

The mining landslide at Pau Branco caused a significant release of mine waste, which appears to have flowed into the water retention structure below.\u00a0 This image, from the Observat\u00f3rio da Minera\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a>, shows the flow path:-<\/p>\n

As the image shows, the landslide overtopped the retaining structure, which remained essentially intact (note the superficial erosion on either side of the dam abutments).\u00a0 The debris, presumably now more fluid having entrained water and saturated sediment from the lagoon, flowed across a major road, the BR-040.\u00a0 This is captured rather nicely in the video below, posted onto Youtube<\/a>:<\/p>\n
