{"id":39810,"date":"2021-12-21T09:40:12","date_gmt":"2021-12-21T09:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=39810"},"modified":"2021-12-21T09:40:12","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T09:40:12","slug":"san-isidro-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/12\/21\/san-isidro-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The movement of the San Isidro landslide in Peru, and a possible relationship with the 28 November 2021 Northern Peru earthquake?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The movement of the San Isidro landslide in Peru, and a possible relationship with the 28 November 2021 Northern Peru earthquake?<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/12\/20\/san-isidro-1\/\">Yesterday I wrote about the failure of the San Isidro Landslide in La Peca, Peru on 12 December 2021, which has led to the relocation of about 250 people<\/a>.\u00a0 Later in the day, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SotisValkan\/status\/1472996309955141632\">Sotiris Valkaniotis tweeted satellite images of the site<\/a>, derived from the European Space Agency Sentinel instruments, that both confirmed the location of the landslide and provided an indication of the movement of the slope.\u00a0 The Tweet should be visible below:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Copernicus <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Sentinel2?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Sentinel2<\/a> satellite imagery captures the motion from an activated <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/landslide?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#landslide<\/a> of 800+ meters length in San Isidro, Peru (Dec 12 2021). Left; total horizontal displacement as measured by optical image correlation (before &amp; after imagery). 1\/2 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/691BgrfwE2\">https:\/\/t.co\/691BgrfwE2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4NrHKpL6hW\">pic.twitter.com\/4NrHKpL6hW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sotiris Valkaniotis (@SotisValkan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SotisValkan\/status\/1472996309955141632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 20, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This provisional analysis indicates that the landslide was about 800 m in length, with displacements exceeding 20 metres in places.\u00a0 The devastating impact on the village is clear, despite the low resolution of the imagery.<\/p>\n<p>There is an interesting other dimension to this landslide.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2021_Northern_Peru_earthquake\">On 28 November 2021 the Amazonas region suffered an M=7.5 earthquake<\/a>.\u00a0 The epicentre was about 215 km from the San Isidro landslide. I<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Miqueridalapeca\/posts\/1876581976063557\">mages posted to the La Peca Facebook page indicate that significant landsliding was triggered in the area by the earthquake<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Miqueridalapeca\/posts\/1876581976063557<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/larepublica.pe\/sociedad\/2021\/11\/29\/terremoto-en-amazonas-evacuan-a-decenas-de-personas-por-el-embalsamiento-del-rio-utcubamba\/\">News reports suggest that there was significant landsliding near to Bagua Grande, 25 km to the south of San Isidro, for example.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thus, it seems quite possible that the slope at San Isidro was weakened by the earthquake, and then failed in the first heavy rainfall event after the seismic event.\u00a0 This is a pattern that we have seen elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Of course this is only speculation at this point, but it is an interesting angle to explore.<\/p>\n<p>As an aside, the images in the Facebook page indicate that in at least one location the valley is blocked by a landslide, possibly in the area of Bagua Grande.
