{"id":39526,"date":"2021-11-10T07:44:03","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T07:44:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=39526"},"modified":"2021-11-12T08:25:08","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T08:25:08","slug":"ministro-hayes-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/11\/10\/ministro-hayes-1\/","title":{"rendered":"A large landslide at the Ministro Hales mine in Chile"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>A large landslide at the Ministro Hales mine in Chile<\/h4>\n<p>Loyal reader <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Geo_Risk\">Luis Donoso<\/a> highlighted to me yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/INSOLENTES\/status\/1458065778008367105\">a tweet of a video that showed the aftermath of a very large landslide in a high wall mine<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/INSOLENTES\/status\/1458059234919141381<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The tweet speculated that this was at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codelco.com\/ministrohales\">Ministro Hales mine in Chil<\/a>e, which is operated by Coldelco. The mobility of the landslide does not seem to be exceptional.\u00a0 There are some large blocks visible in the head scarp region.<\/p>\n<p>Large rock slope failures in high wall pits are not unusual, and this is not the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=bingham+canyon&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">largest event that I have described<\/a>.\u00a0 Big pits typically use <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/02\/08\/predicting-failure-using-ground-based-radar-and-insar\/\">radar and other monitoring methods<\/a> to detect potential failures, so it is credible to believe that this landslide was anticipated.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see better imagery of the aftermath of the landslide, and to learn about the transition to failure.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2021).
