{"id":39384,"date":"2021-10-25T06:35:05","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T06:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=39384"},"modified":"2021-10-25T06:35:05","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T06:35:05","slug":"pyuthan-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/10\/25\/pyuthan-1\/","title":{"rendered":"A rockslide video from Pyuthan in Nepal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>A rockslide video from Pyuthan in Nepal<\/h4>\n<p>The heavy rainfall last week in Nepal and India <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/10\/20\/south-asian-monsoon-1\/\">caused widespread damage including many landslides<\/a>.\u00a0 Interestingly, as I type <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/california-bomb-cyclone-brings-mudslides-flooding-and-power-cuts-12443985\">an atmospheric river event is affecting the West Coast of the USA, also with reports of of landslides<\/a>.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see what the effects of that event will be, especially in areas affected by recent wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>Pyuthan is a hill district located to the west of Nepal.\u00a0 A video emerged over the weekend of a very interesting landslide in Pyuthan, apparently triggered in this event (although this remains to be verified).\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@aashishsenchury10\/video\/7022190910016326913?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1\">This video was originally posted onto Tiktok by aashishsenchury10<\/a>, but it has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/imeander_\/status\/1451958381686624262\">posted onto Twitter<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/sanjeevdevs\/status\/1451906525996347395<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately there is little information that I can find about the location of this dramatic failure.\u00a0 However, there are a few things to note.\u00a0 First it appears to be a wedge failure in bedrock.\u00a0 The post failure images show that the sliding was controlled by two very clear, pre-existing discontinuities in the mass.\u00a0 One of these is very clear in the image below, whilst the other is orientated towards the camera:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39387\" style=\"width: 561px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39387\" class=\" wp-image-39387\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/10\/21_10-Pyuthan-1.jpg\" alt=\"The very clear discontinuity defining the block that slid in the Pyuthan rockslide.  \" width=\"551\" height=\"701\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/10\/21_10-Pyuthan-1.jpg 1128w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/10\/21_10-Pyuthan-1-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/10\/21_10-Pyuthan-1-804x1024.jpg 804w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/10\/21_10-Pyuthan-1-768x978.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A very clear discontinuity defining the block that slid in the Pyuthan rockslide. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@aashishsenchury10\/video\/7022190910016326913?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1\">Still from a video posted to Tiktok by aashishsenchury10.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Second, there is landslide debris between the houses and the rockslide, indicating that this was not the first failure in this area.\u00a0 The age of this debris is not clear.<\/p>\n<p>Third, immediately below the slope there is a road.
