{"id":3903,"date":"2011-11-08T07:46:21","date_gmt":"2011-11-08T07:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=3903"},"modified":"2011-11-08T07:52:27","modified_gmt":"2011-11-08T07:52:27","slug":"rising-trends-in-landslides-in-colombia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/11\/08\/rising-trends-in-landslides-in-colombia\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising trends in landslides in Colombia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Summary:<\/strong> A review of landslide impacts since 2002 in Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/11\/07\/landslides-in-colombia-on-saturday\/\">landslides in Colombia yesterday<\/a> are a reminder of the heavy toll that mass movements inflict on that country.\u00a0 The largest event, at Manizales, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eltiempo.com\/colombia\/eje-cafetero\/deslizamiento-en-manizales_10714165-4\">now known to have killed<\/a> 39 people, with a further 20 still reported to be missing.\u00a0 Unfortunately, this reflects a rising trend in landslide impacts in Colombia that is of great concern.\u00a0 The graph below shows the recorded number of fatality-inducing landslides in Colombia from 2003 to the present, as recorded in the Durham Fatal Landslide Database.\u00a0 The bar graph shows the number of recorded fatalities from landslides, whilst the line graph shows the number of recorded landslides:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3904\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/11\/08\/rising-trends-in-landslides-in-colombia\/11_11-colombia-graph-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3904\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/11\/11_11-Colombia-graph-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/11\/11_11-Colombia-graph-1.jpg 566w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/11\/11_11-Colombia-graph-1-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 566px) 100vw, 566px\" \/><\/a>The trend in the graph is clear, with an increasing landslide impact with time both in terms of numbers of events and the numbers of lives lost as a result.\u00a0 Of course the data for 2011 only extends to early November (but does include the most recent events), so may well increase further.\u00a0 An analysis of the timing of the landslides by month (below) shows that November is the peak landslide period (the number of landslides (i.e. the bar graph) is a better guide here than is the number of fatalities, as the latter is a much more noisy dataset):<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3907\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/11\/08\/rising-trends-in-landslides-in-colombia\/11_11-colombia-graph-2-2\/\"><\/a><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3908\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/11\/08\/rising-trends-in-landslides-in-colombia\/11_11-colombia-graph-2-3\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3908\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/11\/11_11-Colombia-graph-22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/11\/11_11-Colombia-graph-22.jpg 566w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/11\/11_11-Colombia-graph-22-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 566px) 100vw, 566px\" \/><\/a>The\u00a0 causes of this dramatic rise in landslide occurrence and impacts\u00a0 not clear to me, though I suspect that the usual suspects (population growth, urbanization, deforestation, road construction, etc) lie at the root of the problem.\u00a0 It would be interesting to hear whether anyone based in that part of the world can comment?\u00a0 What is clear is that there is an urgent need to start to reduce landslides impacts in Colombia &#8211;
