{"id":38343,"date":"2021-07-28T07:18:10","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T07:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=38343"},"modified":"2021-07-28T07:20:53","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T07:20:53","slug":"bingham-canyon-drone-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/07\/28\/bingham-canyon-drone-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Drone footage of the 31 May 2021 landslide at Bingham Canyon mine in Utah"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Drone footage of the 31 May 2021 landslide at Bingham Canyon mine in Utah<\/h4>\n<p>On 31 May 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/06\/04\/2021-bingham-canyon\/\">a large landslide occurred at the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah<\/a>.\u00a0 Bingham Canyon is famous for the enormous 2013 landslide; fortunately this event was on a smaller scale, although it was far from trivial.<\/p>\n<p>In the last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M4mu4LPRJ-I\">drone footage of the landslide has been posted to Youtube<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Landslide at Bingham Canyon - Salt Lake City, Utah\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M4mu4LPRJ-I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The video starts with the rear scarps of the slide block clearly defined.\u00a0 At Bingham Canyon there is a sophisticated monitoring programme for the slopes, so the failure was anticipated and all of the key assets had been removed from danger.\u00a0 It is interesting to note the drilling that had been undertaken through the area that failed, possibly in anticipation of blasting?\u00a0 I am not an expert by any means of open pit mining operations.<\/p>\n<p>The failure appears to initiate as a translational slide:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38346\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38346\" class=\" wp-image-38346\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/07\/21_07-Bingham-Canyon-1.jpg\" alt=\"The initial failure of the 31 May 2021 landslide at Bingham Canyon in Utah. \" width=\"800\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/07\/21_07-Bingham-Canyon-1.jpg 1975w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/07\/21_07-Bingham-Canyon-1-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/07\/21_07-Bingham-Canyon-1-1024x588.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/07\/21_07-Bingham-Canyon-1-768x441.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/07\/21_07-Bingham-Canyon-1-1536x883.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The initial failure of the 31 May 2021 landslide at Bingham Canyon in Utah. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M4mu4LPRJ-I\">Still from a video posted to Youtube.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Note how the surface of the main block remains approximately horizontal.\u00a0 At the rear a smaller block starts to fail slightly later than the main block.\u00a0 This slice rapidly fragments as it loses support from the main block.\u00a0 Thereafter the entire landslide slowly fragments and, eventually, becomes engulfed in dust.\u00a0 Small secondary failures develop across the scar of the landslide.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most impressive failures caught on video to date.\u00a0 That the drone team were in place suggests that the mine had correctly predicted not just the location of the landslide but also its timing.\u00a0 The result is an excellent case study.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, there is a book about the 2013 landslide, entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookdepository.com\/Rise-Occasion-Brad-Ross\/9780873354318\">Rise to the Occasion by Brad Ross<\/a>.\u00a0 It is, unfortunately, very expensive.\u00a0 Has anyone here read it?
