{"id":37973,"date":"2021-07-02T07:18:45","date_gmt":"2021-07-02T07:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=37973"},"modified":"2021-07-02T07:18:45","modified_gmt":"2021-07-02T07:18:45","slug":"melamchi-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/07\/02\/melamchi-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"The cause of the Melamchi disaster in Nepal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The cause of the Melamchi disaster in Nepal<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/06\/21\/melamchi-a-landslide-dam-break-flood-in-nepal-last-week\/\">The 14 June 2021 disaster at Melamchi in Nepal<\/a> is the most serious monsoon induced disaster to date of the South Asian summer monsoon.\u00a0 It is believed that the flood that swept down the river killed 20 people.\u00a0 It also caused substantial economic damage both to the riverside communities and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melamchi_Water_Supply_Project#:~:text=Melamchi%20Water%20Supply%20Project%20(MWSP,is%20located%20in%20Melamchi%2C%20Nepal.\">Melamchi Water Supply Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The magnitude of the damage to the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/5df39824b5604c80be8dfc429be93cfa\">Melamchi is well-described in a post<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/flyinglabs.org\/nepal\/\"><span class=\"il\">Nepal<\/span> Flying Lab<\/a>s, who have been assessing the site using drones.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/5df39824b5604c80be8dfc429be93cfa\">Their footage of the damage is well worth a visit<\/a>.\u00a0 This is one of the images that they have posted after the event:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37976\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37976\" class=\" wp-image-37976\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/07\/21_07-Melamchi-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"The aftermath of the Melamchi flood in Nepal. Image posted by <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/5df39824b5604c80be8dfc429be93cfa\">Nepal Flying Labs<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the Melamchi Water Supply Project, <a href=\"https:\/\/kathmandupost.com\/national\/2021\/07\/01\/repair-work-at-flood-hit-melamchi-project-likely-to-take-months\">the Kathmandu Post has a good article about the magnitude of the damage<\/a>.\u00a0 They note that:-<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The project\u2019s headworks site at Ambathan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/1609350575995457\/photos\/a.2673787072885130\/2960140870916414\/\">remains buried in flood debris<\/a>\u00a0several metres deep.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>According to Rajendra Prasad Pant, spokesperson for the Melamchi Water Supply Development Board, it remains uncertain when the debris clearance and restoration works will begin&#8230;As per the initial assessment, the project has suffered more than Rs1 billion [about \u00a36 million] worth of damage.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Pant, who is also a senior divisional engineer with the board, said 10 to 15 metres of debris has piled up at the project site and the clean-up work could cost Rs300-Rs350 million [about \u00a31.8 million]. Likewise, the floods have damaged the roads and bridges to the project site and washed away the campsite and construction materials.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There is also another problem. Government officials suspect that the floodwaters and debris could have entered the alternative diversion tunnel of the headworks.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Understanding this disaster, which we know was caused by the rupture of a landslide dam, is difficult during the monsoon, when cloud cover renders satellite image collection difficult.\u00a0 However, on 23 June 2021 a rare cloud-free day allowed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> constellation to collect an image that starts to shed some light on the issue.\u00a0 This is the image:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37978\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37978\" class=\" wp-image-37978\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/07\/21_07-Melamchi-2.jpg\" alt=\"Planet Labs image of the likely cause of the 14 June 2021 Melamchi flood. Image copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly this is a composite image, with the portion to the east being captured at a time with a much higher level degree of cloud.\u00a0 But the western portion is excellent, and it shows a large landslide (about 500 metres width along the river).\u00a0 It is clear that the flood deposits extend from this point down the Melamchi River.\u00a0 The landslide, which is located at 29.993, 85.553, is not present on satellite images collected before 14 June.<\/p>\n<p>We will need to wait for better images to become available, probably in the autumn when the monsoon withdraws (although we could be lucky sooner than this) to fully understand this disaster, but it does appear that the interpretation that a landslide dam developed during the heavy rainfall, and then breached, is correct.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2021).
